Took the rocker cover off yesterday as the bloke who did the tickford head had not sealed it correctly. When I took the cover off I noticed the valve springs are a reddish colour....... It was not discolouration as I could see small amounts of varnish on them and other tickford springs I have seen have all been a blackish colour. Any idea what brand they might be or if they are original tickford ones?
Car is an ef i6 and head is a Tckford |

the springs on my ticky head are a reddish colour too, same as my mates, and they are both untouched. so i'd say they are just ticky springs. however my old ticky head that i was going to put on has black springs

bry40l wrote: Original tickford springs in good nick should be red Well atleast the springs are in good nick Actually I was impressed when the cover came off, the rocker arms were slightly varnished aswell as the cam. The cam gear was filthy but apart from that It was clean for a wrecker head. Exhaust side lifer on cylinder 3 is a bit noisy but I have not ran a cleaner though the oil since the head was done as I wanted to run the gasket in for a while..... Not to mention I did something stupid and went against my beloved Nulon oil and bought Penrite 15/60 thinking I was doing the right thing. The head I wanted was relatively fresh but when it went into the shop it was warped, so I ended up getting one off the shelf, who knows the k's and how long it had sat for so all in all cant complain |

I pulled the rocker cover off a 94DT head ( early EL late EF tickford head ) and they were black. But my 95DT head ( later EL head ) were red.

Yeah I think its an El Tickford head I have as the blokes who sold it to me had EL written on the head I think before it went to the head shop..... Hang on, its definitely got 94DT stamped on the head? Maybe El internals? |

This noisy outlet lifter on cylinder 3 is giving me the s**t. Its not overly loud but I notice it and it gets louder the hotter the car gets. Do you guys reckon its due to the Penrite 15/60 oil I used as it was only changed 1000km ago or would some nulon lifter stuff be worth a shot, or would it be best to say f**k it and do a cleaner additive in the oil, drop the Penrite and go some Nulon 15/40 synthetic?

i used to swear by penrite in all my cars... until the falcon. using penrite in the falcon my oil pressure guage was all over the place, and i had lifter tick always.i put an oil flush through it and i've now changed to pheonix semi syn 15w40 on my engine builders recommendation and havent had any issues since. oil pressure is steadier, and i only have lifter noise on start up now

Cheers, I was sure it was the Penrite too but am p****d at dropping fresh oil. O'h well learn by your mistakes I suppose. Thanks for the info, I have the same issue, the pressure gauge is all over the shop since the Penrite went in just like you said.

i was surprised by it, as every other car ive had loved it. oh yeah, since swapping my oil consumption has dropped too, used to go use over 500ml between 5000-7500k service, now its less than 500 ml probably around 250-300ml

i think it depends on individual engines, im running penrite hpr10 synthetic, no lifter noise, no oil pressure problems, no oil usage, i have 260'000 km on it..
