Got a CMS3 cam arriving soon, this cam has no more than .520 lift. My current springs are stock but shimmed to give 95lb seat pressure with a Wade 1636 cam. Crow do a single spring with 110lb but you need new collets, so more expense. Most other companies Crane, Isky, Camtech seem to do double springs with at least 125lb seat pressure, Any one found a single spring with 110/115lb seat pressure that fits straight in. Thanks.

I've got the part number for the springs that RPD used to sell. I'll dig the box out of the shed tomorrow and let you know.
Though new XR6 valve springs should be able to shim to 110lb and still allow for 520 lift. |

Thanks tickford_6, I forgot RPD used to supply springs as well. The XR6 springs could be and option with the right shims.

A bit more infromation, Installed valve spring height is 46.0mm to 46.8mm, collets are 7 degree multi four groove and retainers are sintered metal type to suit a spring set with a 23mm inside diameter.

Had a look in the shed, seems as though they got thrown out in the last clean up.
I do remember they were a crane set, they come a V8 double spring set, to fit them we used to have to take out the inner spring. thats all that was left in the box the old inner and a set of stock EL springs. |

From what I have found out you can use cleveland springs, the original retainers fit, but most companies recomend using the retainers made for the cleveland springs. Ebay have got a set of Crow 7738-16 (110lb) for around $110 delivered and you can get standard hardened retainers pretty cheap. I got a quote from Performance Springs Australia for a single spring plus damper with chrome moly retainers @ 115/120lb for $238 delivered. I will keep researching to see if I can come up with a cheap performance cleveland set. IF I got three V8 sets that would make up four 6cyl sets.

you just need to triple check installed hights and pressures. I went through this with a 460 big block a few weeks back. Some one had machined the heads and then added a custom spring seat to get his installed hights right. but when i wanted to fit a new cam with it's matching springs i couldn't get the hights or pressures right with out needing a new spring seat. and .040" hight difference can mean a lot of seat pressure lost or gained..
I guess in short, make sure rated pressures are at the I6 installed hight. |

The Cleveland installed height from what I've found is 1.820" our I6 installed height is 1.810" to 1.840" so they should be alright. Can you check the installed pressure with the head already on the motor.
The cheapest Cleveland springs I have found are $110 and chrome molly retainers are all over $100 so the price from Performance Springs Australia seems pretty good.

What you can do is find the exact installed height of each spring in you head.
It's simple enough. get nice bit of strong 3 or 4 mm wire, cut it close to right length but on the long side. fit a retainer with no spring, holding the retainer up by hand. Now check fit the wire and grind it shorter until its a snug fit. The length of the wire is the installed height with in a few thou. Can measure with a vernier caliper take that length and your springs to any good engine builder, they will have spring tester. two ways they can help, first is tell you the seat pressure at your installed height. second is tell you the installed height that the spring in question needs, to have the correct pressure. I would do this before ordering new retainers and locks. As locks come in stock height, 50thou up and 50thou down |

Thanks man, I was wondering about the retainers and collets as the cleveland retainers seem to sit the collets further down in the retainer, which would affect the installed pressure, much to learn.

beg, steal and borrow as much as you can to mock up and measure so your sure of buying the right parts.
and if you need to, get the parts that give a height that is too tall rather then too short. that way you can shim to the right height. |
