Hi all,

since getting my new car (VT Calais 5L) the ol ford doesn't really serve much of a purpose but i can't bring myself to get rid of it so i thought i'd turn it into a weekender! basicially want to get it setup for drift and burnouts, so what needs to be done engine wise? so far i've got a pod (in orig air box) 2.5in exhaust with extractors, lovelle superlows (don't have the right shocks for it yet, still the stock ones)and 5spd done, it's also sitting on 17's (will be using 15's for drifting - cheaper for tyres)

i'd really prefer to do this cheaply as im not going to be the next drift king i just wanna have some fun at the track and try a differant form of racing, if all goes well i'll end up putting a turbo on the ford and then take things seriously but for now i need to learn.

some very stiff sway bars would be a good place to start, and a tight lsd is a must. from there one its just money and more money. did i mention money?

Some more power and your set. You dont need all the fancy gizmoes and what not to dirft. They are just more or less Drifting aids for non-skilled ricers ;)

Got some of these points from a holden magazine.

-Make sure it manual (unloading the rear tyres by popping the clutch)
-Don't have all the engine power tuned for up top, spread it out evenly
-maybe an oversized radiator, also oil cooler
-maybe strngthen up the bottom end
-get a full spool dif with 3.9's or 4.11's
-hydrualic handbrake
-strut bar brace
-strengthen the bodies so it can handle the G's
-upgrade the engine mounts to keep it still
-200% stiffer springs
-up-front coilovers with adjustable spring platforms madatory.
-adjustable sway bar
-Lower it heaps

You won't get enough power out of it to make a real drifter. Too heavy, too slow.

if it is only a weekender jus drop your interior!! get rid of all your sound deadner and all the other crap like carpet and door trims and just have what you need(steering wheel, gauge cluster, driver seat, seatbelt probably racing harness!i have seen a stock engine gemi manual with just a v.good suspension setup and mini spooled diff drift extremely, im sure your car has better power and torque figures, and probably a power range more suited to drifting!!!

also a very tight or hydraulic handbrake is definatly needed!!! your clutch will also cop heaps of abuse so get a very storng unit, plus cos u wont drive it on the street you can put up with an on or off or button clutch!

With drifting, huge power is not necessary, with all the suspension mods, dif, hydraulic handbrake and manual, you'll have no problem drifting.

driftcars arn't about all out power. Its got more to do with the suspension and rear diff set up

one thing that would make it alot easier would be to relocate the handbrake, reachin for the dash mounted hand brake in a hurry an then letting it off in a hurry may not work all that well. thats what id do anyway :)

one thing i hate bout the early e series is the bloody handbrake location....

hi all, thanks heaps everyone for all the replies very helpful.
yea it's no longer going to be driven on the road so basicially anything goes, on/off button clutch??? please tell me more, does it sorta engage the clutch when you pull the handbrake up? if so then how much, but yea im defiently going to need to get a better handbrake...imagine trying to pull that sucker out and push it in real quick :?
interior will be no problem im sure my mates would be more then happy to attack it, clutch upgrade shoudn't be to hard to find on the nortside of brissy should it? any experiences?

with the engine i was sorta heading towards cam, piston, rods upgrade but do i need a bigger intercooler?

all help very much apreiciated<--- can't spell

yeah the main factor is speed and carring that speed through the corner given you loss speed but a decent entry speed heelps and yeah the EA/EB seires can slide quite well given the right cirumstances etc oh well that is my too cnets

Bald tyres and wet track = bad.

The first thing I would be doing is getting the right suspention settings for your car and yourself.
If you can afford to lose weight then thats a +. You don't need a handbreak to drift a rear wheel drive car either..
I wouldn't worry about gaining more power until you've really got the hang of it and if your going to add a turbo then thats when things get more tricky hitting boost through drifts LOL.

But yeh get the suspention all set and your ready to start.
