Just wondering what people consider to be the stronger and weaker aspects of an e series (EF/EL in particular being some of the most common here) engine.
Im not talking performance as such, but general strength and ability to cope. I recently killed a hydrolic lifter from going too hard in mine, which is a relatively minor thing but im now weary of going near redline. In terms of bottom end vs top end.. what is vulnerable to higher power and revs, keeping this discussion to the engine only and not the drivetrain I know the Au bottom end is stronger with its reinforced sump and better balanced crank, but I doubt this is a major factor unless we're talking a considerable amount of power. How does the top end compare?

Seems to be alot of "idle problem" threads.
Yep the lifters dont like redline bouncing, i found in mine too, but most other cars are prolly the same lol Another weakness i reckon is they should be able to rev higher.... 5500 aint enough!!! |

headgasket and head bolts stretching/warping
revs are due to the design of lifters as well as bore/stroke ratios well under 1

Seriously do people google "f**k up modifications for Fords owned by Jews" and get linked straight to this site nowadays? AU,factory fitted tickford kit/IRS, t5,Sports ryder/KYB: gone. |

head gasket.. of course.. ive done two of those so far..
I guess im more interested in things that can be fixed though lol.. As for redline bouncing.. I dont have a rev limiter for some reason so I watched the needle go all the way to max and then some.. The power dropoff after 5500 is quite sharp.

The weak part would be where the 2 cylinders that fell off is.
Always going to be a TQE |

Yeah ya do. EF/EL is limited at 5700. I have a video of mine going way past max, but that was just the inertia of the needle. If I hold it there it settles at 5700 |

It's all in the engine design, the B series engines were engineered to rev to 6k and hence have 6k rev limit. I think that's pretty high for a 6 anyway. |

My car was still making power on the dyno and only stopped when the rev limiter kicked in... I need more revs!! |

Interesting.. Is this a fairly consistent power band? Lower revs of much use? Im unsure how you would get power over 5500 on an NA e series 6 without seriously sacrificing the lower end..

Sorry to stray from the thread but heres the dyno sheet. And yes it appears the revs cut out early but he didnt use the cable to measure rpm's as it was chewed up in the fan the day before so the dyno software had to estimate the revs.
The dyno operator was surpised too when it cut out before dropping off..... |

Hard to draw anything conclusive from that graph especially with your busted cable..
Maybe its ok for a little bit further but I doubt it would warrant removing the rev limiter considering the implications..
