hey guys i found this part hanging from the front drivers side of my car under the bumper bar, it wasnt secured very well and pretty much just dropped out. my question is whats it for and does it have to go back in? these bloody car manufactures adding things that are not needed! lol... too much fiddling around to get it in there if its not really needed. to me it looks like just an air pocekt to go to the battery? any help would be appreciated!

Its a drain tube for the battery case, its to stop any acid or water spraying over the body or draining on the body from the battery. I had to cable tie mine back on as the mounts IMO are pretty crappy.

mmm... And here I thought it was the air outlet for the fresh air breather for the battery box.
Saves the battery from overheating (causing possible explosions) and reducing its life due to underbonnet temps. |

I wouldn't think that it mattered what type of battery he is using.
Its one of those parts with an important job, so it should go back in.

ive heard different things about it.
one guy told me all the taxi drivers used to remove them to get more airflow around the batteries, another guy told me ford had to add it in as a last minute measure as batteries were overheating without it and whoever supplied batteries to them refused to honour the warranty unless they made changes. i ran around in my old car without it for yonks and never had any problems.

Part of your story goes back to EA days when Falcons didnt come with battery boxes. They had to add a battery box and a pickup snorkle and outlet for the box to solve the overheating problem.
Surely you've seen the fully sick looking pickup snorkle on the later EAs to EDs. But what you all cant see on an EF/EL is the air pickup pipe, which is under the headlight behind the bumper. Unless you take the bumper off or headlight out, you'd never see it. If you take that pipe off, all it does is vent to under the front guard. But its still being fed fresh air, which is why it doesnt really matter if its there or not. Preferably good to have it there. |
