Methinks I am about to go through this...the EF I just bought at auction I think might have a blowing gasket.
Oily looking muck in the expansion tank and losing coolant ( actually just water in there...) as well as going through oil and smoking when accellerating hard... Come to think of it, might need to throw some new rings in there too...starting to get a bit more expensive than I thought it would be...but then what project doesn't? It's sitting on 323,000km at the moment. Never done a head gasket on an OHC Falc before...done loads of early Falcon sixes...did a complete head gasket swap on an XY in 90 minutes once. Done OHC on a Laser and on a 4 pot Volvo too but never Falcons.

the pains you will have is the intake manifold bolts, however removing the top half of it first will make them easier to access.
possible snapped sockets trying to undo the headbolts, or even snapping heads off the bolts. learning how the chain tensioner works, which would be easy if the search function was working !! |

I think I need a workshop manual...
No stranger to tight head bolts...the ones on the early volvo 240 donk had socket heads on them and were almost impossible to get out... Worst though were the head bolts on a six cylinder truck diesel...torqued to 120 ft/lb.

So having a lower temp thermostat will help the headgasket last longer???
I just bought 2 thermostates 1 is 72 degree and the other is 82degree so im gona try them both and and see what the difference is as apparently going to low with temp will confuse the ecu abit???

I have talked to an old taxi mechanic that worked on e-series and they would use 77 or 82 degree thermostat's too prevent/prolong head gasket failures.. ECU will still go into lean cruise mode etc.............I have been running an 82 degree thermostat for a few years now and never had a problem.

My EF has just clocked 190 000 kms. It blew the headgasket at 90 000 kms and then again at around 150 000 kms. Both times it was leaking coolant into the cylinders.
And now for the good news, its blown the headgasket again... |

So using either 72, 77 or 82 will make the ecu go into lean crusing mode??? Is that a bad thing??? what is lean crusing mode???

Well i tested the 72 degree theromostate this morning and after a 30min drive it showed that it took about double the time to reach the start of letter M. This may be a good thing but it still reached letter M and i wanted to reach the start of letter A, so dropping a whole letter which would be significant.
Going to try the 82 later on 2day or next weekend and see how i go. Im going to contact a few radiator places and see what they say and if the thermostates dont work out then im going to a radiator place and get it replaced or any other options i have.

You want the ecu to switch to lean cruise mode(IT's A GOOD THING for fuel consumption). When the revs are stable and the temp high enough the ecu will trim the AFR's lean so as to save fuel on the highway etc. Running a too cool thermostat will cause the ecu too always run in rich warm up loop. So your fuel economy will be affected greatly.

My ride had nearly 650,000kms before I changed the headgasket. Only did it because I was fitting a 94DT Tickford head to it.
The old mans EBII Fairy has nearly 300,000kms and the headgasket has yet to be done. |

Too many things are going wrong in my attempt to change it so i'm just gonna get a second hand motor and throw it in.
