Hey guys,
Im curious to see owners of EF/EL 4.0L replaced there headgasket and what was the cause of the gasket to blow? Anyone thats votes under 150,000kms please say that u voted for 150,000kms and why the headgasket blew please.

Reason for EF/EL gasket failures is 'bad design'. The head expands at different rates than the block, Being a long block, the head 'creeps' and the gasket does not.
The AU MLS gasket is, multi-layer, it can shift with expansion. Some companies even tap into the rear water jacket to allow better flow to the rear cylinders, sure this helps, but a AU and new bolts has great success rate.

the h/g sit itself twice in the ed once at around 100,000 (cant remember exactly as i was only a wee lad and then once again at around 220,000 when i had it. Cause was just wear and tear i spose.

Still running the original head gasket in the EL Fairmont-touch wood. Got 150000km on the clock. I installed a 82 degree thermostat in about 90000km to reduce bi-metal stress.

My ef is leaking now at 204000, not sure if its been done before, but for now its not causing any prblems (5000km since discovered)
Could be a coincidence but 5000 before i noticed it, my heater tap blew, and i had to make it 5 k's home topping up with water, so it got pretty hot which i think caused it to start leaking.. (head slightly warped?) its between cyl 5 & 6 as usual |

What is the thermostate degree from factory that is used??? Does the 82 degree thermostat make a big difference? What do u mean by reduce bi-metal stress?

340,000kms and still original gasket, touch wood, it depends i think partially on how the car is treated also.

stock thermostat opens @ 91 degrees celsius
putting a 'colder' one in would affect the tune you would think... |

I have an 82 thermostat in mine, the difference in tune is minimal, but is there. Should be correctable on the chiptorque.
91 deg just doe not leave enough room for error in our climate, imo.

Maybe install the 82 then drill a couple small holes on the side of it??? maybe wont affect the tune so much???

mine has gone twice.
both times due to coolant leaks. one was the bursting seam on the radiator at about 230000 the other time the surge tank cracked. low coolant cracked the head about 330000.

BPT performance sell a powerstat(82 degree thermostat for e-series)
http://www.norcom.net.au/~bpt/Ford%20Thermostats.htm Bimetal Stress One factor that makes many engines hard to seal today is the use of aluminum cylinder heads on cast iron blocks. Aluminum heads save weight but expand 1.7 times faster than cast iron when they get hot. The difference in expansion rates creates a lot of motion and scrubbing between the head and block. If the head gasket cannot handle this motion and is not strong enough to withstand the shearing forces that occur every time the engine is started, run and allowed to cool back down, it will eventually leak.
