Hey all,
well its been awhile since I was last on but have made some progress from my last post http://www.fordmods.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=100734&start=20 well I've added the shims now and still having major issues with hunting and stalling... I've checked the timing, it's about 5-10mm to the left of the IGN mark but seems to jump around a bit in both directions?!?! I also checked the ISC, TPS, MAP sensor which all seem fine. new dizzy and leads(sparks are nearly a year old now 0.o) I cant find any air leaks any where and have even checked the ground on the ECU. I did a cylinder compression check tonight and came out with these numbers all in psi. cyl. 1. 150 cyl. 2. 155 cyl. 3. 155 cyl. 4. 150 cyl. 5. 150 cyl. 6. 115 (is this too low?) I tested each cylinder 3 times and all numbers were consistent. the motor has done 350-400K not sure exactly as the odometer stopped just befor 300K 18 months ago. What now guys I've exhausted my DIY knowledge and now turn to the masters! HELP ME FORDMODS... |

This all happened when you took the head off judging by the last thread?
Is the Cam timed to the crank? Did you check the ignition timing with the car in diag mode? Tried running it on a computer without a J3 chip? Cheers, Tim

yeah mate, I never got around to running the J3, it's still sitting here, I just need to find a tuner that can tune the car with the J3 so thats not the issue. as far as checking the timing in diagnostic mode, I have no idea how to get into diag mode or what to look for with the timing. when I took off the head i zip tied the chain to the cam gear and just hung it up, so I dont know if the chain slipped 1 tooth down low. could that cause all this it it did and how the hell do I fix it if thats what it is? Is the lower compression in cylinder 6 something to worry about?

You can only check the timing in diagnostic mode. So put the car into diagnostic mode and then check the timing. Can't remember what pins to short for diagnostic mode but someone will fill you in on that.

isn't cylinder #6 a little too low?
I thought a cylinder needed at least 120 to ignite. |

How many shims have you got in the Rockers/Lifters?

Did you machine the head true and ensure the block was true?
Did you apply a gasket sealer to the head gasket when installing? The water jackets had not corroded out? Cheers, Tim

Cheers, Tim I had the head worked so it should be flat, as for the block all I could do at the time was scrap it and get it clean as possible, I was told I shouldn't use any gasket sealer on the head gasket so I didn't. from memory the cylinders did get water/ coolant in them so I can only assume the piston ring have worn to hell, so I'm contemplating new rings. |

Big job...
Usually they vapourise the water and it doesn't cause too much effect plus the cylinder pressure forces air gas into the water... We always use an aerosol spray sealer called gasket copper coat or something like that... Is conductive to help with heat transfer and electrical continuity... And works as a very thin sealer just uncase there is a micron or two of imperfection... Until you work out where the air is going I wouldn't be assuming too much... As mentioned could be into the cooiling system... Into the oil galley... Into the block... Past a valve... Pressurise the cooling system and make sure it doesn't drop... Was the head or block corroded? They water jackets get rather thin on some heads... Cheers, Tim

Cheers for the help TimmyA
I've notice there is alittle smoke coming from the tail pipe, it's a fine line between white/ blue smoke, too close to say. theres also a black liquid spitting out, at a closer look it's more of a clear fluid with tiny black particles in it making it black, carbon maybe? the head was perfect so I'm sure it's not that, the block didn't have any corrosion on it, so I'm cant say. apart from pressurizing the cooling system (I'll have to look into how to do that) is there anything else I can do to narrow down where the air it going? |

No doubt there is a method to check how well your valves seal, but I don't know how... Maybe a mechanic on here can help you there...
As for required compression again I have no idea what your aim there is... Hopefully somebody knows more methods to test for this than me? Is it running rich or lean at all do you know? Checked fuel pressure and all that? Have you done a diag test on the EEC? It could be as very simple as a sensor out of range... Dead hego or map or something weird and coincidental? I'd be testing as much as possible be resulting in pulling too much apart... Otherwise it may all be in the name of a crook sensor that took 5 mins to swap out... Cheers, Tim

yep, there is.
take out spark plug #6 make sure the valves are in closed position. force some compressed air into the spark plug chamber. if air is coming out the exhaust then possibly the exhaust valve has dropped. If air is coming back out through the throttle body then the inlet valve has dropped. Make sure you try it on both cycles, because it might just be that the valve is open for the next stroke. If all is OK, then re-install plug #6 & repeat with plug #5. |
