Hey all! I have this intermitent knock coming from my EA 30th mpfi.. Its definitely not a tapping/ticking tapper sound. When starting early in the morning sometimes it sounds areally rough and the knocking sound is exagerated. Then there are times when it doesnt make any knocking sound at all.. its really starting to s**t me. The oil gauge is a little below halfway at start up, then when warm just sits on the LOW RED park of the gauge.
I have also noticed that i am using a little oil. Next weekend i plan to drop the sump *yeah i know its a b**ch of a job, but will be worth it!* and clean the pickup and internals nice and good. While im at it i wanted to replace anything that i possibly could. Here is a pic i stole from a thread...... is there anybody nice enough to circle which bearings would cause the knocking?? And a rough price on how much a set would be? I get confused when people say big end bearings, main caps, etc Cheers!!

Time for a rebuild or s/h engine. Also might be time to get a workshop manual.

is it really worth spending time and money on something your going to replace down the track?
Just keep driving it how it is. |

True.. i guess its more to satisfy my own curiosity. Wouldnt somebody be able to identify which bearing has failed, undo the 2 bolts and replace it with a new item?
Its just something i have wondered with piston engines.. rotor's i have no problems with |

trying to diagnose it from here, when the car is there is impossible,
It could be a big end bearing (which is the one on the crankshaft end of the conrod that connects to the piston), it could be piston slap, which you wont be able to do anything about unless you rebuild the motor etc. If you want to have a play with it, drop the main (crankshaft) and big end caps and check / replace the bearings |

It would be damn near impossible to figure out exactly what is wrong with a motor vehicle over the net... but as you said its mostly me wanting to have a play with it. Ill just end up dropping the sump and giving it a good clean... for s**t and giggles.
I like pulling things apart, seeing how they work and chucking them back together...... then adding the parts left over to the ever increasing pile |
