Hi there,
My 97 EL was running a mild Surecam but I wasnt happy with it so I decided to go back to the stock EL camshaft. So I rang a wrecker and he sent me one for $40.. all good I thought. First thing the BCD on the surecam is about 52mm but the BCD on my newer supposed stock EL cam is around 51mm (shouldnt it be around 53mm)? Anyway I stuck it in and had to use a shim and remove the retainers from the HLA's to stop it ticking... now after replacing the coil (it failed on the test drive!) and reseting ignition timing the thing won't idle very well. It does ok in neutral (albiet a little rough) but stick it in R or D and it dies instantly. I'm thinking I've inadvertatly been sent a modified cam...? And I was supposed to be driving to Qld today J |

As soon as I see someone having problems with cams in EL's the "hybrid alarm" goes off. so...
1st, is your engine a hybrid (whats the build month of your car). 2nd, what was the part number of the cam the wreckers sent you. Could that have been from a hybrid engine.

Well my EL did the opposite. Idled like s**t in P or N and in D or R it sits nice but then roughens up.
In the end it was found that my Timing was 2 teeths off :S which I was told is a bit wee too much so I dunno what happened there...and also my rocker cover wasn't on properly. phong =P~

Yep I thought the same thing at first. No it isn't a hybrid (part no. starts with 94DA I think) and both my cams (the surecam and the wrecker "stock" cam) have the same part numbers. I even measured the rocker ratio to make sure The later model camshafts have a smaller BCD again, like 48mm or something...? J |

OK, then assuming that the cam is the right part I would first reset the ECU and base idle. If that didnt fix it I would say the cam timing is out.
Also have I read it correctly that you added a shim to the stock cam? If so it might well be overshimmed and not closing.

I reset the ecu but havent checked checked base idle although the idle rpm seemed correct in neutral. Cam timing is correct (mark is just above the matting surface) stockstandard wrote: Also have I read it correctly that you added a shim to the stock cam? I don't believe so as I only have a single shim and this cam has at least 1mm less BCD than the surecam which needed a shim (i.e. it isnt shimed more than the surecam). Do you think it is odd that this cam has such a small BCD ? J |

Not sure, dont have the base circle specs and only reground cams here. Whats does the lobe lift work out to?

Whats does the lobe lift work out to? I cant find any bcd spec's either, I'll stick a dial on there tonight and check... J |

Can you get a look at the end of the cam? If so, does it have something stamped in it... Most cam regrinders stamp some ID there.

If you don't mind me asking, what is the Hybrid motor in an EL all about? How does it differ from a normal motor?
Thanks |

Thanks The 'hybrids' are the EL motors made after Feb 1997 and are a mixture of EL and AU parts. No big deal except for the camshaft. If you use a hybrid cam in a e-series engine or an e-series cam in a hybrid engine and it will either not run or cause physical damage.

Ok inlet and exhaust lobe lift is 0.242" so a valve lift of 0.484", so it isn't a stock cam but not that wild either? I don't have a degree wheel so I don't think I can measure much else? Lift wise it is much smaller than my surecam which never stalled (that I can remember).... J |
