my falcon has a gear-type whine noise coming from the front belt area - I cant figure out what it is - thinking maybe the belt tensioner?

i originally thought it was the p/s pump but after close listening i *think* its coming from the other side - I havent taken the belt off and started it yet to confirm its not coming from the engine yet because I only have a 1/2" drive socket set not a 3/8 :/ lol

i heard another EL that pulled in behind me makeing the same sound - so I thought it might be a common problem that people would know about.

also... is it realistic to possibly get close to the quoted fuel milage on the highway? i did about 640km's before the fuel light came on, probably about 70 of them were town / the rest cruise ~ 105-115, filled up with 62L (10.3L/100), but the workshop manual I have quotes 7.6l/100. the car is a manual with stock diff etc, pacemaker 4480's, 2.5" redback, k&n panel.

thanks :)

on the highway, my trip comp moves between 7-9ltres per 100 kays. dont know how accurate they are, but on that basis id say its possible to get the claimed 7.6, if not a little better with the mods you've done.

thanks, any ideas about what might be causing the slight decrease in economy? one other thing I noticed is the car seems pretty "flat" under 2000 rpm (the opposite of my old crossflow), is this normal ?

without actually feeling this flat spot i wouldnt know. your idea of flat and mine could be 2 completely different things.

how old is your air filter? you said it was a k and n one. are you recharging it with the cleaner and oil regularly?

check your spark plugs etc aswell.

Where did you get 10.3 from?

If you travelled 640km's and then put in 62 litres, that works out to 9.68l/100

7.6 would be best possible conditions. Reality would give you more like 8.5-9.5

ford motors are incredibly fuel efficent for there size, if you drive them right.

If your getting s**t fuel economy, check your temps, mine was always running cold, and used a shedload of fuel, I replaced my thermostat and now its better, the deadspot i found below 2000 rpm was gone too.

one reason it might not be using a lot of fuel too is the fuel filter could be plugged up

lol i screwed up the calculation :/ i guess 9.x isnt too bad. temp sits around "a" on the normal so about 1/4-1/3 which i guess is normal.

so, anyone got any idea about the whine and/.or what could be causing it?
i'll try and record a sound file of it on my phone.

also does anyone know if its possible to stick a trip computer in a futura? or need to swap BCM/other stuff? (probaly not worth it unless its easy...)

one other thing, the rear seal in the T5 ... looks pretty easy to replace, drop the tail shaft, take it out, stick a new one in. am I missing anything? thanks :)
(theres a little bit of oil on the floor there)

That sounds about right mine was colder than that.

You can stick a trip computer in a falcon, there is a guide in the technical section you need to add three wires from memory for the fuel/revs and lights.

yeh the seal is simple to replace on auto and manual falcons.
the noise will more than likely be 1 or 2 of your idler pulleys. just pull the belt off and spin them and you'll be able to tell.
