Hey,
EL Falcon developed a dry pulley whine/grinding type noise while in park and neutral. Sometimes it disappears for a bit then comes back. Put the car in any other gear noise goes away. Trans has been flushed/filter changed. Oil changed and pulleys feel fine and ran engine with belt off and noise is still there. I've only had a quick look at this but when you drive it, transmission shifts smoothly and never makes the noise unless stated above. Noise seems to be coming from the transmission area I think. Thoughts? |

Sort of sounds like a dry speedo cable. Do EL's have a speedo cable?

Based on that fact my Mum is the best around! |

Yep, XC Falcons were the last to run a speedo cable.
That whirring noise may be a worn bushing/bearing or worn pump for the input shaft on the tranny....???? Anybody confirm this ????

Wouldn't it be doing it in loaded gears as well? A worn transmission pump is more of a high pitched whine?

The transmission shifts fine, no slip. Trans oil was still red when I emptied it and there was no metal sludge on the pan. Oil did not smell burnt.
Stalled it up it definitely doesn't feel like anythings wrong. If you didn't go into park or neutral, you wouldn't know there was a problem. I replaced the transmission drive shaft oil seal and the output shaft was moving around a fair bit. Does this resonate on the falcons when worn? |

The BTR automatics have a habit of torque convertor bolts coming loose and contacting the front cover plate on the transmission. Worth checking this, just in case. It's not hard to check the bolts with the front of the car up on stands, and all it costs is a bit of threadlocker (if you don't want to be doing it again in six months).

Checked it, they are fine.
I used a stethoscope to pin point where the noise was coming from and it was coming from the transmission extension housing. Changed the bush and seal and the noise is still there?? The only thing is the speedo pedometer looked a bit bent where the plastic gear part is. I can't see this being the issue its not doing anything while the cars stationary. You hear the noise put it in drive its dead silent like normal then about a minute being in drive the noise starts again. This is the same as in neutral. |

What about changing the gasket, springs and O'rings on the rear Servo ????....just a thought.
Also check the servo piston for cracks.

The car was taken to an auto trans place for a diagnosis. They said full rebuild. Just doesn't sound right. No debris in the fan, oil was good.

Yep as they always do!
To me just sounds like a bearing in the trans somewhere being noisy. Driving the car you wouldn't even know the gearbox "requires a rebuild"!! |
