Coolant mate, either that, or one of your mates has been really admiring your engine...

How long you had the car for?
Sounds like someone has ran some stop leak or chemi weld through it to seal up some leaks. The white powdery thing is a sure sign of it. |

I think the heater hose runs from the back of the thermostat around behind the engine and back into the water pump.
I believe thats what your referring to, this is for the EL should be the same with most e series. |

The heater system (hoses) consists of a black steel pipe from the thermostat running under the intake then changing to rubber hose with a smaller bypass hose also passing through the heater core, followed by another black steel pipe back to the water pump under the exaust manifold. The white powder could be only oxidization from the engine previously being cleaned. Has the car been missing, loosing coolant, smell of coolant in engine bay, any signs of steam (exaust side)? If it is the head gasket they normally fail on the exaust side. Ensure the reservoir cap is sealing correctly (no cracks in seal) cooling system may not be pressurising and loosing coolant via the overflow.

Theres been a MAJOR loss in coolant, but I really dont think its the headgasket......no milky oil, no oil leaking, no exhaust fumes, exhaust sounds puffy lately, and the proformance of the car has been good....
I've replaced radiator, thermos seem to be working, radiator hoses, and ive done the thermostat and have no idea why its overheating,I could put it down to the fact that i put the coolant and water in at the same time and didnt bleed the air? Cheers guys |

milky oil and s**t like that is for internal coolant leaks have a look up under the exhaust manifold for the white stains as this is what coolant does and 99.9 percent its a head if not welsh plugs

If you're losing that much coolant then get the system pressure tested.
Also get a Tee Kay test (Chemical test), it picks up exhaust gases in the cooling system. What area of Melb are you at? |

Also have a good look at your heater tap which is in a b--ch of a place near the fire wall under the inlet manifold. Mine fell apart when we were lifting the motor. It was completely corroded away to near nothing.

First thing in morn or when cold, CAREFULLY remove rad/coolant cap and fill to top of lid.
Replace cap and start. Put finger over reservoir tank overflow tube and see if there is a constant exhausting thru tube. This should start to happen in the first 5 mins after starting. Indicates exhaust gas venting to coolant, head gasket. When motor has heated up look for water on ground patches and check for a wet passengers floor. If wet floor check heater. Follow any leaks to their origin and remember that it might have flowed down the chassis or motor so look carefully. You could turn motor off at this point and be bloody careful as system should be pressureised and a part could fail as soon as it is touched and cover you with steam and boiling water.
