What were the symptoms?
-Losing water? -Milky oil? -Discolored spark plug(s)? How long did it last since it first started losing water or you noticed the oil being watered down? Reason being mine has started losing water and I can't see anything under the car, it loses perhaps 3-500ml per 2-3 weeks so it could still be a water pump bush or leaking out of a hose when the engine is hot. Problem is I may not have the time in the next few weeks to pull it apart and am planning a driven holiday to queensland over the christmas break. Cheers |

Whether oil gets watered down depends on the leak. I've had 4 head gasket failures in 2 'E' series cars and neither of them leaked into the oil. In all cases coolant leaked externally.
You are experiencing the same symptoms I had with my EL. Take the heat shield off the exhaust manifold and have a look behind it. Look for signs of dried coolant running down the block. Also try and get a look under the intake manifold. If it was leaking from a hose you will generally see wet coolant somewhere in the engine bay. Same if it was leaking from the pump. If the radiator cap is suspected of being faulty put a small coke bottle over the overflow hose and see if any coolant is caught in it. Good Luck.

Its clean between the 3-4 cylinder under the exhaust manifold where I've seen them leak before and as you point out. I can't find any evidence of coolant loss, all spark plugs are exactly the same color and the oil is perfect.

i only just got my head done, i was loosing coolant externally on the exhaust side, and that started about 3-4 years ago, so i finally got round to doing it!
i never had a problem with it and who knows how much longer it would have lasted...

only had a slight oil leak on the passenger side ... no oil mixing with coolant ... no coolant leak.
only enough oil to stain the outside of the engine only ... not enough to drip. Cylinder No.6 was overheating though .. presumablly blocked water gallery causing it. Was only overheating under load .... was fine on cruise though.

I was losing small amounts of water, then idle got rough, then enough water leaked into cylinders 1 and 2 to hydraulic lock it and prevent it from starting.
Had been losing water since I got the car, but once it started idling rough it went downhill in the space of a week. Bit of russian roulette really as to how long it will last. Depends where it's blown, if it's blown or just not sealed, external leak, internal leak... Change it ASAP would be my advice. After work job if you have all the parts ready. If your head is warped/not suffieciently flat, and you dont have a spare head to get machined/recoed it lengthens the off-road time a bit. Maybe chase down another head, get it recoed and maybe some port work if you've got the folding, grab headbolts, inlet and exhaust manifold gaskets if you desire, a headgasket, then at least if you DO get the time you can do it straight away with minimal downtime.

And hope your head bolts aren't seized in either ... otherwise your screwed.
Then it becomes an engine swap.

If there is no water in the oil and no external signs it leaking then it could be a simple as a faulty cap letting water escape after you switch off..
Otherwise , although it works and works well I would stear clear of chemiweld unless you are are deperate or selling it.
