This thread may help explain why the torque/angle method is the most consistent way http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=42880 .gogetta wrote: when did they change the design of the bolts? Visibly the AU bolts have the thread running further along the bolt shaft.

My new head has this, and I've not seen it anywhere else. One of the lines from the overflow bottle has a T-piece in it, and it runs another 3/8"? hose to the rear of the head near the 6th cylinder chamber.. This is a mod by a company called All Head Services. They have "supposedly" research why the E series blow gaskets and have redirected coolant to help overcome this. When you get a head from them they also try to sell you there own version of a redesigned head gasket. From experience use a AU steel gasket and look after the cooling system and you should have no problems.

e-series head gaskets blow due to bi-metal stress. Basically the aluminium head expands at a ratio of 3:1 compared to the cast iron block under heat. This expansion and cooling of metals at different rates causes head gasket failures.
try fitting an 82 degree thermostat rather than a 92 degree thermostat. It was used by most taxi mechanics to increase mileage between head gasket failures and basically ford only used the 92 degree thermostat to meet emission regulations. I know of some people that even run a 77 degree thermostats with no problems. Fuel consumption will be the same, an 82 degree thermostat will still allow the ECU to go into lean mode while cruising.

I have been running 1 at 10:1 compression for ages, no probs. ive seen more then a handfull of AU's need a head gasket. By far the biggest head gasket issue i see at work is corossion. Keep the cooling system right with a decent coolant, not tectaloy or quick kool crap, and your half way to looking after your head |

What would be a good coolant to use then?

I use this coolant. It's around $40 for a 5 litre bottle but well worth it. I also top up with distilled water.

I use Ford coolant. $70 for 5L of concentrate. I know this will work ok, so decided the little extra was worth the peace of mind, and cheaper than coolant related repairs.

I agree, saying they never blow is setting the bar very high. "Last a really long time" is closer to the truth I would think.
