I just bought an ed which had the head gasket replaced professionly in 8.6.04.
they fitted a 'vrs' gasket kit with new head bolts, vacuume tested valves, machined head surface and fit a new radiator and water pump (according to invoice). Can i expect to blow another one some time soon? why do they go in the first place? |

Head gaskets usually go roughly every 200,000 K's. The reason head gaskets go is because an alloy head is fitted to a cast iron block. Cast iron and alloy heat up and cool down at different temperatures often resulting in head warpage. Always ensure your cooling system is in top condition....That always helps prolong the life of a head gasket.

ahh thanks mate! that explains the notes on about how it stalled when A/C was on and low coolant fluid.
they changed basically the whole cooling system besides the overflow bottle. |

had my lecturer tell me a another one. the alloy is a cost saving thing. carbon steels are fiddly and need chemical tests. the alloys are easier to control.
plus, even tho the aluminium price is through the roof, its still cheaper to produce to a head because it requiers less heating to melt the material. why not make an all alloy i6 or barra? well i think ford knew the cyclone was coming for a while. as for the HG, its a b**ch. the more cold starts your i6 does the more likely the chance the HG will go as it is rubbing the three materials more frequently

has anyone seen before the head mod where they tap another water circulation port into the rear of the cyl head and then run a coolant line to it.....no idea if it helps but mines going fine

Has anyone considered that the recommended method of torquing down these heads could have something to do with it? Because in the last few weeks I have had reason to rebuild some of these engine's & found that to tighten them down to 30ftlbs then go 90degree's is not really successful, I did notice after calculating the total torque figure (90ftlbs) that every head bolt was at a different setting!!!

He's some reading that may help:
http://groups.google.com.au/group/alt.f ... 906c1edd3f http://www.aa1car.com/library/gasket_failure.htm The second link is yank, but it does explain the pros and cons of AU type steel gaskets as well. The other thing apart from the gasket itself are the headbolts - original E series bolts are prone to fatigue over time - present day items are superior in that respect. The earlier type bolts are no longer available.

when did they change the design of the bolts?

YES! My new head has this, and I've not seen it anywhere else. One of the lines from the overflow bottle has a T-piece in it, and it runs another 3/8"? hose to the rear of the head near the 6th cylinder chamber.. |

You must be installing it wrong then or driving with a hell of a coolant leak. miss information BS There is always one smart a** on these sites, you offer info and someone wants to shoot you down. I have been running 1 at 10:1 compression for ages, no probs.
