The e-series thermostats have a tail but the AU one's don't. Why is this?
I am running an AU motor with EB thermostat housing, EL ECU and dual fuel. What thermostat should i run?

it's not a difference with e-series and AU thermostats - it's a bypass or non-bypass thermostat.
if it's running LPG, use a 'non-bypass' thermostat : if it's not on LPG, use a normal thermostat : |

Okay, that's interesting.
What you are saying is different to what i have been told by repco and ford. They both say the e-series has a tail and the AU does not, regardless of whether the car is lpg or not. I don't see why the AU should be any different, although it has a coolant loss limp home mode, which might create desire for the lack of tail, plus some are factory lpg, i don't know. The way i see it, with the tail the more the thermostat opens the less water will flow through the heater and LPG pipes. I don't understand why you would ever want this because i would have thought you would always want full flow to the heater tap, and thereby have full access to heating as required. The same goes for the lpg. ??

yes it doesnt make sense why the LPG would be different to normal..
the tail should be open when cold and close when hot....if it operates like other bypass thermostats that is... unless the water passage in the bypass is different on the AU to the E series

what happens when the engine is cold & the thermostat is closed the bypass is open allowing flow to go straight to the heater making it warm up for the demist & so on but when the engine is at operating temp water then flows around & the bypass still getting hot water to the heater core but when a Eseries get converted to LPG & you tap into the bypass circuit as your crusing along water flow to the convertor slows down (bypass is closing) & the convertor starts to freeze thats why you use an AU thermostat no bypass valve on the thermostat or just chop the bypass valve of the E series .......

but what happens with a non lpg eseries with bypass thermo? wouldnt the heater then not work once the engine heats up? the bypass is meant to close when hot so ud end up with no heater??? confused

every thing works as is should, bypass open when cold water going directly to heater core, bypass closed when hot, water still going to heater core, from water pump heater pipe from memory....the bypass problem only effects LPG converted E series cars...... |

Swear, swear, swear. I wonder if converters can partially freeze? I have had them freeze and it's obvious, but what if they were partially freezing? That could cause fuel supply problems that would be hard to trace. Both my XG and EB have tails. Swear. I researched this but never got the right information.

i've bought genuine ford thermostats for AU and AU eGas and they are both identical 'waxstat' 92 degrees thermsotats except for the extra spring and 'tail' for the bypass pipe.
either way i don't think it matters that much except that you should use a non-bypass thermostat (either bought or modified) in an LPG falcon. |

My XG on lpg with a tail had noticeable but not dead stop freezing issues during winter startups, so i can see reason for no tail.
I wonder though if you can have partial freezing with a tail during engine running at normal temp?

My LPG hose is not affected by the tail as it is on a T piece where the temp sensor for the ECU is.

check where the other coolant hose from your converter goes.

Into the return line of the heater hoses, also not affected by the tail.

The tail is there for a reason.
If the motor is running too hot, The thermostsat will fully open diverting full coolant flow to the motor. What is more important when your moror is running hot? Heating the cabin or cooling the motor?

I fitted a brand new aftermarket Dayco AU thermostat to my car (non tail) and now the temp guage is reading like a pogo stick, all the time. After you cold start the motor it slowly climbs to just under half (scary), then over about 4 seconds quickly drops back to the bottom of the normal zone, then over about 10 to 15 seconds it climbs back to the same point again (scary), then drops again, and so on, ad finitum. ?
My thinking is either the thermostat is rubbish, or everything is 'okay' the problem is just that my temp guage is running off the temp sensor on the thermostat housing whereas on the AU the temp guage reads off the head temp sensor, or something else. ?
