why is my 5th cylinder destroying spark plugs?
Hi all, my au1 6cyl seems to go through spark plugs on a regular basis. Ive bought new plugs bout 2 months ago and replaced 1 already. Last one -same 5th cyl- had split in half straight down centre of the inner ceramic core. This one i replaced today has hairline fracture same spot -inner ceramic core- in the same cyl, could this be, and please dont tell me it is, a sign of a pickled head gasket? Any help or opinions appreciated. Thanks Jas

You running a decent quality plug? Brand wise? Sounds like a fault with the ceramic... Or some sort of detonation causing a shock to the ceramic... But again, ceramic should take that...
Cheers, Tim

unfortunately not, plugs dont show signs of corrosion or rust but they were only put in only like 1000 ks ago probably not even

theres no evidence of any kind of physical contact is there? is the electrode at the end damaged in any way, or even maybe a shiny spot where its been contacting anything? Any obvious noise? Agree with prev post, please post some nice clear detailed piks...

something that was happening before the plug was my airbox on intake was split and was backfiring on lpg, end up blowin through the intake ducting also, which id just replaced then once id fixd the prob of to much air getting in she was runing like a pig. Originally thought was dodgy lead as id replaced plugs. On a whim i checkd plug . Is it just coincidence its the same cyl i found last suspect plug?

no signs of contact plug end looks really good almost put plug back in, thinking lead probs, under close inspec found hairline frac in ceramic that surrounds the conductive inner

Tipping that its a d**k injector or something similar. Either that or the coil on #5 is producing WAY too much spark

Damage to a single spark plug limits the possibilities. Lean detonation would be my best guess - and partially blocked injector the most likely cause. Swap two injectors around to see if the problem follows the injector.
Is the plug oily at all? Any smoke - especially "puffs" of smoke (ie, not all cylinders)? Oil leaking into the cylinder (rings, valve seal, head gasket) reduces octane and can cause detonation. Otherwise, spark plug lead or spark plug not getting good contact with head are the only other things I can think of that are specific to a single cylinder that may be involved in the issue.

u say valve seal? actually the car does blow a bit of blueish smoke upon start up, this is a classic sign of valve prob is it not? Also when i drive it on lpg bout every 7-10 mins it just dies, no power, no nothing , it doesnt stall persay but it just dies revs drop from 2500rpm to about 1500 and stays stable for bout 10 sec its like it goes into GHOST mode or something, then kicks back in and its alrite for another 7_10 mins. This does not occur on petrol
