hi guys,i have removed the plenum from my bbm today for polishing
after inspection have decided to polish the inside aswell looks worse than the outside :roll: .
just wondering if opening out the pipes that bypass the butterflys or even removing the most part of them would make any positive/negative difference.
i am assuming that it wont affect the bbms job and just let more air through the bypass. but you know what they say about assuming :wink:
any thoughts much apreciated cheers

btw g/f's project car in shed n/a i6 extrs,pod,plugs etc no engine mods this year any way. but this engine will only ever be n/a.only cause ba's are geting so cheap and she will have hers p's when im finished

i was told by someone that polishing the inside of the manifold has a negative effect on it. with the ripples in the manifold is disturbs the air going into each cylinder chamber, it is used like another filter that captures all the dirty silty stuff. when it enters the chamber for ignition there is more air for ignition which then gives a better burn. dunno if its true or not. but sounds plausible

Ah the boundary layer theory. I don't think it affects plenum chambers as much as cylinder ports where the air speeds are high enough. Best bet is to have a look inside an FG plastic inlet manifold and see if its smooth or not. if it is then go ahead and polish your plenum away.

the short runner section of the manifold where the 6 butterflys are have been polished and the rest has been deburred/smoothed on my new bbm manifold.

the idea of not polishing is for the head intake ports when there is fuel in the mix, not the intake manifold, if car is on gas perhaps polishing the manifold might not be a good idea.

ive been considering removing part of each of the ducts in the plenum.
the more more i look at it the more my brain tells to take me out to the shed and grind tha f out it

If you were going to turbo it then you could get away with hogging it right out but in an NA application its not all that straight forward.

First question, how do you drive your car and where do you like it to start pulling from?

it will be driven on the street , its auto needs diff so that might change.
my missus has had her l plates for 5 years and she drives all the time.
but we both drive it pretty quick, how do i answer that without coming off like a d**k or incriminating myself lol

If you need bottom end then I would advise against hogging out the BBM.

yeah it would take forever anyway outside shiney will have to do.
one thing i did notice was there was thin oil around the manifold when i took it off wtf? is this good
i was thinkin it got there via the hoses from the rocker cover

you know its bad if there is a pool of oil in the bottom of the runners, when i pulled the manifold of my old "VERY" dead motor there was alot of oil in there o.0

i didnt gut the lower section, only do that if you are going to turbo (fyi xr6 turbs have no butterflys there). as i said i polished the six trumpet looking bits where the butterflys are, and just deburred and lightly smoothed the rest of it.

if youve got it apart its not to hard to just give it a small once over in the butterfly section, all depends on where you want to go in the future :)

ive got some pics around here somewhere ill see if i can find tomorrow.

damn you vile falcon nah just jokes ,
it goes hard for what it is + doesnt use oil or blow any smoke (bought the engine last year}, im guessing plenum has never been removed before or the chance someone over filled it with oil
also i was maybey driven it for 3 months alday every day with a stainles fine mesh cap on the throttle body,
plan is a catch can

Where did you get that crap from? If there's oil in there the factory pollution control system is doing its job. If you don't want oil in there then spend a few hundred bucks on an oil air separator or throw a bit of sponge in both of your lines that run from the rocker cover to the inlet manifold.
