did any one ever solve the problem of the wondering temp gauge (rising and falling between "A" and "L")? it seems to have started in my car, only after the Headgasket was changed and cooling system flushed and cleand. it was working before hand ok sat at 92*c when warmed up and never changed, now it fluctuates . could it be a shagged thermostat?

about 99% of the time a wondering thermo will need a new thermostat. It's a cheap fix $10-$15 for the part. I've had this problem a couple of times.

have the same problem with mine, its nothing to worry about and the thermostat has been replaced same time the head was done and radiator flushed.
All i can put it down to is that the radiator is cooling alot better than before so when the thermostat opens it cools the engine faster than the thermostat can close. it doesnt over heat so its not bothering me. |

yeah - unless you start getting into the red bad bit - I wouldn't be too concerned

I thought they were air cooled engines so if they stop running after a hard workout the egine temp is higher then normal if restarted soon after?

Air cooled engines ??, I instantly think of Vee Dubbs
No I think what he's saying is that once you stop the engine, the temperature will rise slightly, because there's no coolant circulation or airflow through the radiator - you can see this by turning ignition on and watching the temp gauge.

The EF-EL engines running a 92degree Thermostat should have the Temp guage hovering between "A" and "M" for optimum Engine operating temperature, regardless whether it is a Cold or Hot day. If the Temp guage reaches and stays on the "R"mark for any period of time, then you have problems!!And you should have your cooling system attended too. However it is also perfectly normal for the Guage to immediately increase when the Engine is Switched off even going as for as the "R". As I put forward all these questions a couple of years back with a Radiator Specialist!

Mine is wondering from A to R. goes up in about 8 seconds and down 8 seconds. Never seen that before.
Change thermostat and temp sensor I reckon. Does that sound about right? |

Umm.. does it do that all the time. If so your Car could need attention with the cooling system. Like I said should only run Between "A and "M" worse case scenario driving up a hill it might momentarily go close to the"R" but should never stay their as. Might be that the one of the Relays behind the Headlight needs replacing. Yes Thermostat could also need replacing or might just need a good old system flush or even the Thermos might not be working properly. If in doubt get it checked out at a good Radiator Place. Cheaper than having to have a New Engine put in if she overheats!

It doesnt stay at the R it just wonders aimlessly between the A and the R constant movement constant speed of the needle.

Is that with your XR6 or XR8 Timmeh? Yeah mine just hovers around the "A" and momentarily sits on the "M" if I give the Loud pedal a few squirts, Or if I am cruising up a hill will go as far as the "R" then go back down to the "A" shortly after. But day to day driving just sits on or around the "A"

Could be that as the gauge reading is damped there could be an intermittent connection to the sensor or the sensor its self could be intermittent. Warm the car up and stop it then try wiggling the wire to the sensor while someone checks out the reading with the ignition on but not running. Cheers TW.
