Cars once had wooden chassis's....apparently they moved enough that on different weather days, it was a different car to drive.
Glad we don't use wood for chassis's now....wouldn't be any good for my driving style....

Oh yeah i forgot they just invented plastic log fires it was just a throw away line lets not try to be too smart after all the wood won't need retardants once it's been on this thread!

Yeah mate, there is a product call "FF88" that can withstand temperature's as high as 1020 degree Celsius for up to 2 hours. It's a excellent intumescent water based coating.

Not too sure about wood, tho I do think it would probably be OK - most people who have not liked the idea have pointed out that it burns - so does plastic and you don't see anything else when you open a modern car bonnet...
I'm making one at the moment out of sheet aluminium - I've left the bottom of it unpainted to help reflect heat - on a previous car I `borrowed' a pyrometer from work to check temps on a very similar airbox - after a drive the temp on the filter surface was within a few degrees of outside air, even though the surface of the box was maybe 5 - 10 degrees hotter again (ambient engine bay temp was about 30 degrees C higher again..) the box can get warmed up a bit but remember that while its in use the airflow through it is whats important - filter temp shows that this air is pretty well not getting heated to any real amount more than outside air..

Oh, and CJH mentioned wood chassis, Morgan only stopped using mahogany in , I think, the 90's...I mean thats a sports car using a V8 with wood chassis and they even get raced like that so it must work...

Sorry mate, I should just posted my reply openly without quoting anyone. I'm just trying to correct the misconception about wood so people don't get deter from using it as a flexible alternative.

I remember hearing about a type of wood that grows up near Townsville.....when dry, won't burn, but if wet, it will......weird.

Plastic doesn't absorb water/oil etc... unlike wood. Dont waste time just insulate the plastic airbox if you must, or spend your time and effort to make power elsewhere. CAI is the best way to fix the problems for heat in the intake.
