would having a wood airbox/pod cover work better than having steel as it wouldnt give off as much heat or absorb as much? say 3ply or simliar with some foam or insulation on the filter side of the wood

I would say no !
Wood will be more a*** than steel and thats where your first problem would be. Second i think heat will create some play in the wood im sure wood can take a 40-50degree day but i dont see if working to well in at 100+ degree engine bay.

you will be supprised,
wood has better insulation properties than any metal. the only thing that could cause issue is warping from heat, but i cant see it catching fire or anything like that.. |

I'd never put any wood in my engine bay.
Plastic>wood.

Bad idea, wood cannot be heated and cooled the same as metal and plastics. It will warp and crack.

What's wrong with a plastic airbox? The factory ones work fine...
Having said that, my EF has a modded airbox. I have insulation material fastened to the "hot" side of the box and a secondary intake cut into the leading face - also I cut off the internal snorkel to increase the diameter  so I guess that makes me a pelican

You want to put a highly combustible substance in an enclosed space with a machine capable of producing a fair amount of heat?
Wood doesn't need a naked flame to burn, heat will do it. Sounds like a bad idea to me....

people have been using wooden carby spacers for years. infact i think one of the US companies still sell a wooden spacer.

Insulate your intake and airbox then. Power gains would be so minimal. Wood has no place in an engine bay in my opinion. Technology proves it also, they dont spens billions developing cars for no reason.

i was just throwing it out there what if you put plastic on the outside of the wood? and i would really like to see a piece of wood catch on fire at 100-150* i just thought you might not get as much heat soak from wood as you would metal or plastic even and if it warps alittle does it really matter i bet 90% of the time the pod enlcose's arnt perfectly sealed at every joint/place it touches the chassis what about engine rocking/shaking?

A compressed gasket is a bit different than using it for an airbox. To be honest the wood needed to do a airbox would be more expensive than pretty much anything I would expect.

I don't know if it would work but it would look awesome on like a show car or something like a nice timber air box like all stained and smooth and that.

3ply is cheap as chips, its easy to work with and unless it's resting on the extractors there is never going to be enough heat to worry it in the slightest.
With some thought and a small amount ability it could be done quite well and once it's been smoothed and painted 99% of people wouldn't even know it was timber. |
