hey all
this is what confronted me after popping the overflow tank on the EF Gli wagon i want to get - i'd imagine with a coolant flush it'll be ok - checked the oil & nothing funny in it at all - so its just a bad looked-after coolant system? just seeking some confirmation! cheers! btw - car has done 170,000kms or so

Yeah just looks like it hasn't been maintained, from picture looks like top hose also starting to swell and the white powdery buid up at ends of both hoses look like just a lack of maintanence. I would leave the flush in for a while or atleast do it a couple of times. Looks pretty clean otherwise.

i would say they have just used plain water and no specialised coolant - just rust from the engine block...

Mmmm it looks a bit neglected, rust on bolts etc. Get it pressure tested, cant hurt.

So if the resi tank is like that im guessin the radiator is pretty bad also not to mention the block its self. Now everyone here knows E series radiators are bad for silt build up and causing many over heating/head problems.
At least by the pick the oil around the filler cap shows it has been used but maybe for toping up only. Check under the rocker cover for any build up of old oil (grease) |

should be ok flush it out with radiator cleaner proberly a few times till the water comes out clean then put new coolant into it, run it for a few weeks drain it then put new stuff in again and then should be all good. and just change coolant every year should be all good.
make sure u drain the block and heater core as well. get all the s**t out. only problem u might find is that u may create some leaks from thermoste water pump ect, as all the rust in there may be blocking up the gaskets from leaking, but ur better off cleaning the system out. |

Appears to be missing 2 cylinders fras but apart from that, comments from others appear apt. Get it for a good price and a new radiator shouldnt destroy the budget!!

one of the main problems i see with this is it will actually block up teh jackets on the head gasket, this happened to my old motor and caused water to leak out the side of the motor.
ill show you a pic of what happens URL=http://imageshack.us][/URL] just means you may need to change the head gasket. now im not sure what other people think but once the block starts getting rust in it is there anyway to stop it apart from taking it out and getting it chemically cleaned |

hmmm - well, head i can do myself if it blows sometime - having a spare tickford engine laying around helps
just had another look again - it looks like a lack of care as opposed to any *major* problems - first thing will be a full coolant flush & we'll see how it goes from there!

yeah that would be it, putting water through them isnt good, as someone else said raditor tanks would be rull of silty rust to most likely
