i have a slightly worked XF 250 running straight LPG. has standard cooling with a 16inch thermo. recently the temps started jumping up and down violently, the thing would hit the max temperature then drop down and so forth. i bought a new thermostat as the one in there was a few years old and put a small hole in it as i feared vapour lock may be the problem. the forst day it worked fine and then today the thing got up to and varied between 60% - 90% on the temp gauge for the first drive and then on the way home it jumped around between 40-50% on the gauge? any ideas what the problem is, im getting woried that im going to damage my expensive head? thanks

Have a look to see if any of the hoses are collapsing if they are replace then give it a flush and fill her up with coolant.

Also change the temp sender incase it has a intermintant fault.

the ford we had last was a XF 8 seater wagon with a sick puppy 5 poster bullbar it had a 250 X-flow and for the 6 years we owned it it never had a over heating problem, so i dont think its a common problem, you could have some of your water jackets blocked and that can heat things up.

I'm not saying the cap is stuffed...it could be the wrong cap. If you run a non recovery cap on a recovery system it will create excess pressure. If a recover cap is used on a non recovery system the opposite will happen (obviously). If, as in the case of my xh, the rubber on the cap is stuffed pressure won't build up, therefore lowering the boiling point of the coolant.

even if u lower or raise the boiling point of the coolant, how is this going to change the fact the coolant is getting too hot and over-heating in the 1st place ?

Most of what has been said are good points to look at now all we have to do is sit back and wait and see what he finds.

you can also look at the timeing as well as that can send the temp up

good point.... but if the car idles and revs like a well-oiled machine can there still be a timing issue ? i have heard of the 'one-tooth out' scenario but is this enough to cause the prob?
