Just wondering how far u need to go to achieve around 10:1 comp, can you just shave the head or do you need to run flat top pistons?

I have a feeling if you run an AU head gasket and give the head a shave it will come pretty close.
Just be careful in shaving the head as it isn't an ideal way to increase comp (timing chain issues, no room for if you need to give it a skim after head gasket etc).

Pistons are the best way to get compression.......decking heads = problems....decking block = problems.

it's doable with shaving the head and an AU gasket, but you will have chain rattle issues that will turn into broken chain guides.

mine is going to be at around 9.8:1 with the shaved head

Not really... you only need 20 or 30 thou off the head, with an AU gasket IIRC. The AU gasket is only 18thou so it's about 25thou thinner then a pre AU gasket. that's the same as taking 45 to 55thou off the head and using a EL gasket. that's alot and is more then enough to cause problems. When you start adding non standard cams into the mix it gets worse. |

I replaced my head gasket with an AU gasket & had 20 thou taken off the head. I'm also using ACL Race pistons. Now I'm wondering if the 'HLA noise' I'm can't fix is actually the valves hitting the pistons.

Yeh you would have known if it was valves hitting pistons by now! lol
I know the total is about 50 thou tickford_6, theres plenty done that way and are fine, including mine. |

This might sound ridiculously bodgy but I'm just throwing it out there.
What about pad welding certain parts of your combustion chambers and working them back down to something more realistic with a dremel? |

It's not bodgy, and is very common pratice on a number of engines that don't have aftermarket heads available. |

True but with all of the man hours required to do this properly would it be more cost effective to use a set of custom dome top pistons? Or is the cost similar but the repeatability of hand grafting heads too difficult to achieve in order to warrant its use for the mainstream?
