Hi everyone,


I have done heaps of searches about putting standard NGK XR6 plugs into my el sedan and still cannot find any real answers in past threads.

What benefits would i see, i know they run cooler?

I have got some new 8mm leads and was thinking of advancing the timing by a couple of degrees to go with the xr6 plugs? would this help at all?

there a must if you have LPG. don't expect any big gains but as there just sparkies in the end! XR6 had a bigger camshaft and better flowing head and more agresive ECU tuning and higher pressure fuel reg, so unless you've modded your car to have these I dunno if there'd be any point? You might find that with the Tickford enhancements the engines were running a bit hotter than they liked so they fit them with colder plugs? I dunno. but for $3.00 a plug you shouldn't break the bank giving it a try and it's the best way to find out and it won't hurt the engine!

the colder plug is because of the slightly higher compression and the better air flow.. not because of engine temp

What causes the better air flow? The bigger cam? Just that I thought both heads had the same inlet sizes.

ports are slightly different, cam slightly bigger,

Well don't pacemaker extractors allow the engine to breath better (exhaust valves flow better) so then the colder xr6 plugs may benefit???

Breathing is the inlet buddy. Your exhaust valves are closed when the engine is taking air in...

Breathing is the inlet buddy. Your exhaust valves are closed when the engine is taking air in...


there is time when both are open, and extractors help with scavenging at this time.

previous you mentioned 'slightly higher compression' in the ticky motors, what causes that? are the heads smaller at the bottom or somethign?

i havn't looked in to it enough to tell you. i've heard some people say chamber size.

it's only a small increase. XR is 9.35:1 stock ef was 9.3:1
so by now with head skimming most cars will be pretty much higher then both

Anyone with similar mods outlined in my sig using XR6 NGK plugs on non XR6 motors?

Noticed anything different?

1) Cold Starting
2) Warm Starting
3) low or high rpm
4) fouling quicker etc.

What's the difference? Xr6 plugs are one heat range colder?

I wouldnt expect a performance difference... heat range is about making sure the engine runs "right"...

How do the standard plugs look when you pull them out? Can tell quite a lot about the appropriateness of your plug selection by its appearance...

Standard NGK plug - BPR5EY-11 at 1.1mm gap.
Tickford NGK plug - ZGR6B-11 at 1.1mm gap.
As you can see they differ in more than just the heat range (if just the heat range differed then the Tickford part number would be BPR6EY-11)... If you had an NGK catalogue you could figure out the other differences but the info doesn't seem to be avaliable on there webstite...

Found this on the web, looks the the XR6 plugs are the same right through from EA-EL. Since they are projected further(like seen on the EA-ED standard plugs) compared with standard EF/EL plugs they must work a bit like the Autolite JMM plugs?

This must be old as EF/EL were not mentioned.



COLDER PLUG OPTION FOR FALCON RANGE

Due to overwhelming customer demand NGK Spark Plug Co. Ltd., has developed a colder projected gap plug for L.P.G. powered EA and EB 6 cylinder Falcons.

The spark plug which is designated ZGR6B-11 is one heat range colder than BRE527Y-11 and also incorporates an extended metal shell design. Refer Fig. 1.
The extended metal shell improves anti fouling characteristics by preventing fuel which is not sufficiently vaporised in cold conditions from entering into the space between the insulator and metal shell. This design feature is particularly useful for dual fuel engines.



Applications for ZGR6B-11 are as follows:

FORD (L.P.G.)
Falcon/Fairmont 6 Cylinder
EA, EB 3.9L 1988 - 2/92
EB 4.0L (Inc. XR6) 2/1992 on
XF 4.1L 1984 - 88

Fairlane 6 Cylinder
NA 3.9L 1988 to 6/91
NC 3.9L, 4.0L 7/1991 on
ZL 4.1L 1984 - 88

LTD 6 Cylinder
DA 3.9L 1988 - 92
DC 4.0L 2/1992 on
FE 4.1L 1984 - 88
