There's been a fair few XR6 Turbo taxi's getting around Melbourne.
I wouldn't go in one, because... how can i say... multicultural drivers can't drive them for s**t, i wouldn't want them in a Turbo!
THe best taxi's are the Aussie drivers around the outer suburbs of Melb, or at least they are around my area, they let you drink some travellers on the way, put whatever music you want on. Then you can sometimes call them on their private mobile number to come and pick you up, and they usually try and get to you.
There's also a guy further out from me, in a country town, that still uses an EL taxi... I'd hate to see how many km's the old girl has done! I would bet that its on its third times round the speedo, if not fourth!

But really a a BA XR6 is f**k all other than the body kit and a couple of other bits. Performance enhancements over the standard falcon is f**k all. So an XR taxi is only adding a few creature comforts.

the seats alone are worth it.
the other thing is as a second hand car (which alot of taxis start life as) there isnt alot of price difference..

how do taxi compainies work anyway? are the taxis part of a fleet and owned by the taxi companies, kinda like buses are and taxi drivers just drive whatever taxi they are assigned to, or are the taxis privately owned by the drivers?

Just trying to get my head around why the hell they would spend the extra cash for a XR6 or 8

a little rom column A, a little from column B.
big companies like silver top ahve their own, quite large, fleet and hire drivers as well as have privateers who simply 'rent' the technology and receive assignments from them.
smaller companies like west suburban are mainly privateers, and own a small fleet of their own.

Ford had some xr6t taxis they sent out into melbourne service to do durability testing - this was years ago and they all got crushed eventually!

Most cabs are a bought as a second hand sedan and then turbned into cabs - I spose it depends on the owner, might have got it cheap from auctions or it was a repairable write off then turned into a cab!
