after a few heads comeing back thought i would try it and low and behold they dont blow anymore, at all

Obvioulsy you know more than the gasket manufacturers then, and all the people out there who never retorque must just be lucky. But when it comes down to it on a falcon 6cyl (with decent head bolts) you can get away with overtorquing the head, which is what you are doing when you retorque. Actually many ford performance mechanics will overtorque the head bolts on higher performance engines by quite a bit initially, they still dont retorque the head bolts after use but its the same end result. |

After the head bolt has been torqued to its yield point it streatches and permanantly deforms. If you back it off you will have to replace them or you are setting up for possible breakage. just as bad as blowing another gasket.

That was my understanding too, that once you loosen a torqued up head bolt you must replace it because they stretch when initially torqued up and cannot be trusted to retain their tension if re-used.
Besides, it's the gasket which is compressing, much more so than the metal can expand from the heat of being run in. Maxxr6, you wouldn't be torquing down stretched head bolts as you would be compressing the gasket a little more after being run in. No?

I do find alloy headed engines do give head bolts a hard time though...It's not realy the gasget in this case..

If they come back after you change the head gasket, maybe you're doing something else wrong or your torque wrench needs recalibrating?!!?? |

should have done it right the first time on time , clean the block properly, shave the head, head bolts are now au bolts so 35nm, then 120 degrees should be dunky dory! if you have just done it and its leaking just take the rocker cover off and do the head bolts up another 45degs
