Hi Guys,
I need your help again. I have two 12 inch Soundstorm subs in a suited bandpass box (pics and specs below). It does sound good for what it is, though I'm searching for more bass. Am I better staying with what I have or am I better off purchasing a single 15 inch Pioneer sub (pics and specs below) in a suited sealed enclosure? I was thinking that a 15 would fill the boot with bass a little bit better. Has any one got any 15 inch Pioneer subs? *Subwoofers SCW-120 Size 12" Subwoofer *POWER HANDLING (PEAK) Watts 500 POWER HANDLING, *Continuous 250 Watts *MAGNET STRUCTURE 60 oz. *IMPEDANCE 4 Ohm *FREQUENCY RESPONSE 25Hz - 2.5kHz *SPL 1 WATT/ 1 METER 92 dB *CONE MATERIAL Metallic Injection *VOICE COIL 2" aluminum *SURROUND Butyl Rubber *FERRO FLUID Yes X-Max 3mm MOUNTING DEPTH 5" * 15" Foamed IMPP (Injection Molded Polypropylene) Rigilite Composite Cone Woofer * Dual-Layer Urethane Surround * Direct Bobbin Mounted VCCS (Voice Coil Cooling System) * Conex Damper with Damper Ring * Lead Wires Integrated into Damper for High Reliability and Improved Power Transfer * Projected Pole Yoke with Vented Pole * High-Energy Ferrite Magnet with Bumped Back Plate * Low-Q Design for use in Small Sealed Box (2.0 cubic foot recommended) Specifications * 700 Watts Max Music Power * 350 Watts Nominal Power Handling * Frequency Response: 15-1,500Hz * Sensitivity (Efficiency): 91dB (1W/1m) * 4ohm Rated Thanks Guys!!!

Need to kn ow what amp your running?
I assume the 2 x 12's are single 4ohm voice coils, which means the amop is seeing a 2ohm load so it's probably not a class a/b amp, a monoblock perhaps? They are more efficient at lower impedence so i would want to maintain a 2ohm load. I would reccomenend 2 x 12's of better quality. I have heard a number of good single 12's outperform 2 x cheaper ones. 2 x good 12's is the way to go and will blend better with your front stage in the long run as well.

(please don't laugh LOL) I'm running a Boss 1200 watt (peak) amp, at 2 ohm stable, wired parallel. The Soundstorm subs are a single voice coil.

No problem, it depnds on who much you are looking to spend. I would reccomenend 2 x good 12's and a new monoblock amp all up this will set you back approx $1,000 - what ever you get for your old set-up. If thats too much then a single 15" (perhaps the pioneer one) and new amp are my suggestion. This sort of system is likey to cost around $600-700 - minus your old system value. Obviously a lot can be said about boss amps, but in all seriousness they have very little in the ay of protection circuts and their real world power is well overstated. My concern if you just upgrade the sub is you'll end up frying it and pioneer (or whatever brand you choose) will not honor a warranty on it. The other thing is that amps are about more than just power, other factords such as dempening factor and signal to noisee ratio affect the sound and i think you'd find that even the same subs with a different amp would sound much better.

Thank you for your reply! I have decided to take your advice, and save the dosh and buy some thing with some quality, not just noise!

go 2 15' subs each in a box but partition it so they are seperate.
sound qaulity - as long as it is not distorted and you have a good set of speakers splits wat eva and have it tuned nicely will be sweet.

also remember that the subs have to integrate into the sound of the system for it to sound "smooth". Otherwise you'll have pear shaped sound, with heaps of bottom end and not enuf top end
12"s are generally the limit for a 6" component system, if u start looking a multiple 15's u will want to improve ur midbass componentry. just some advice. i increased my system to a fairly good quality setup with 2x12" subs in a ported box, and the 6" splits up front struggle to fill that gap... (they don't really, i love my bass)

A friend of mine has 2x10' rockford fosgate subs and a 15' kicker sub setup in his boot and it has a pretty nice sound range. It might be worth looking at for yourself.

They are all great ideas!!!
Two 10's and a 15 would have its advantages, cause there would be a punch of bass and then a low note at the end of each beat. That would be very different!

generally not a good idea to mix sub sizes. they perform bass notes differently and u will quite often encounter cancellation and overlapping... its like have 1 12" in a sealed box and 1 12" in a ported box :S

One in a sealed box and one in a ported box. Both the same subs in each box, though I noticed the one in the ported box seemed to of bottom out first at high volume, and the one in the sealed box held its bass note.

Personally I now use and prefer a single 15inch sub compared to the 2 x 12 inch JL's I recently removed but the key is plenty of quality power from the amp, not just cone size.

I went to my local car audio shop on Sat, and he suggested a 15" Fusion sub with a custom tuned ported box, with a 600w r.m.s (not peak) Fusion amp for $1200. He said that I will not be able hear myself think. Worth considering? And what set up are you running (amp, brand of sub etc)?

Stick with this idea, 2 x 12's of good quality, you will not look back, if you must have3 even more bass (and i'd be su[pprised if you get good 12's and good amp) then go with 3 x 12'. In my opinion better than 2 x 15's and around the same or slightly less box space required. also 3 x single 4ohm voice coil 12's is a 1.3ohm load which is ideal for some of the better monoblocks you can get which will deliver 100rms or more at 1.3ohm and can be bought second hand for $500 - $650 if you look around

I might look into getting a 3x12" set up like below.
I might even give it a go of making the enclosure. I just haft to make sure that the box that I make, is suited to the subwoofer specs.
