u can buy spacers from all s**t sound stores, ie jb and strathies
 hehe

Perhaps Pyroay could confirm this, I don't think there would be any audible advantage of mounting a 16x9 on a spacer with a 6" hole, in fact I would expect it to be worse in the low frequency area due to the fact the cone must push and pull against a restriction that is acoustically very closely coupled to the cone. An extreme example would be the difference in moving a push bike pump handle with and without a tyre attached.

there is no advantage sound wise, its actually worse, just means u dont have 2 cut up ur car

Well someone else ended up paying for these 6x9s and they're better than the standard ones .. so I'm swapping them over. Plastic spacers will be purchased from whatever s**t stereo/car store I drive past next hahaha

guys - its a wagon! hence it won't be the same as sitting them onto the parcel shelf!
adam - it might take a little more work for you to get that working right - ask steve (dcstraight) as he's good with the wagons & audio installs

Anyways, I drive a 94 EF Falcon GLi Wagon and was thinking of putting 6x9's in my tailgate too. Do the spacers really degrade the sounds that much or is it just the audiophiles in here that notice it? I'd really like to avoid cutting my car up so spacers sounded like the logical option for me at least. Thanks, ROCKY |

welcome to the forums rocky
the big issue i see with trying to fit 6x9's to the rear door is that with the sedans, the speaker & spacer have the parcel shelf to sit on - so you can bolt straight down through, and have a solid 'base' as such. with the wagon tailgate, the speakers will forever be pulling down - as they're not sitting flat - which would mean that you would have to do some extra work to get both the speaker & the spacer holding in place - and i doubt the plastic inside the tailgate is designed to be drilling into, or for holding anything of much weight. adam - i have a set of 6x9 boxes sitting in my garage which you could have for cheap if you want - i had them for my wagon, but seeing as how i don't have a wagon anymore, they're not needed!

A few things:
a. with spacers I don't think you'll get the plastic cover back on, actually I'm damn near certain you won't! b. the wagon tailgates rattle enough with 6"'s, will be nasty with 6x9"'s! I did look at putting 6x9"'s in when I first got my wagon and recently looked to put a set of VDO 8" co-axels but they wouldn't fit. Personally I'd recomend you go with a sub and 6"'s in the tailgate. |

sounds good to me, on the proviso i can find them! lol i'm pretty sure they're in the garage somewhere, i just have so much s**t i need to find out where

it's actually metal in there (once you remove the plastic cover). Now that I think about it I presume your talking about mouting the 6x9"'s directly on the plastic cover, but as you said would not be very smart at all - and look very messy! slam the tailgate once and I'm sure the plastic will crack and damge and speakers fall. there is already a bracket thingo made up to house the 6"'s speakers. If your serious about fitting 6x9"'s into the tailgate then the best method I could see would be to remove the 6" bracket, and modify it or remake it to house 6x9"'s. I don't think there's that much depth there for the speaker magnets though - hence why the factor bracket raises the speaker up from the tailgate. |

yeah i didn't figure they'd fit under the plastic at all - hence i figured they'd have to be mounted outside on the plastic - which wouldn't be good!
not worth the effort trying to mount speakers which aren't *really* that good anyways - better off with a pair of 6's & a sub
