I'm sure there has been a similar topic before, but couldn't find it, so please forgive me!
I recently purchased some new 6x9's for the car (Apline Type R, if anybody is interested). Anyway, I was considering mounting the 6x9s from the bottom so I could keep the factory grilles where they are (I'm trying to keep it looking stock because I park on the street). To my surprise, I can *just* get the 6x9s in from the bottom. I have about 5mm max between the bottom of each speaker and the gas tank (they don't touch at all, but are VERY close). Anyway, my question was, will having it so close to the gas tank effect the sound at all? (Even when I have been putting the speakers in there to size them up the magnets keep getting stuck to the tank!) Cheers |

I used the packers from autobahn to lift my speakers away from the gas tank in an XF I owned.

There will be a slight decrease in performance from the metal tank shorting out the magnets flux lines from being so close but I doubt you will notice. The main problem I would think from bottom mounting the speaker would be the cone touching the parcel shelf unless a spacer is going to be used.

Do you reckon the black plastic one that came in the box would do the trick? |

No idea on what came in the box but I assume any spacer is going to eat into the 5mm clearance you had if you are mounting it below the parcel shelf. I would be top mounting them and using a spacer.

Is there any advantage using a spacer to top mount them if I can fit them in the 5x7 holes without one?
