Hey guys,

i would like to know if upgrading my alternator, EA had 70 amp, to an ef/el one, what should i be getting. A new one or one out of a wrecked car, like from ferntree gully auto salvage.

Does anybody know the price of either a new one or second hand one, also how hard would it be to install or would a auto sparky be the go.

Cheers.

Will it be compatiable as they ran different belt systems (EF/EL got Serpentine).
As for buying new or second hand, depends on how much money you got, and if you can find a second hand one thats gunna definately work and that!

I'd be speaking to an auto elec or the guys at FTG see what they say but especially for te car audio gear 100amp vs 70amp heaps better

I got no idea about the belt bit Id call Nick or Darren at FTG and see what they say...

The stinger alternator I wouldnt go for lol some places Ive seen them for sale at just under 2K.

probably abit extreme....i have 3 bateries and a cap and my system is well over 2000w and my alternator runs fine (100amp one) so unless your system is pretty crazy then the 100amp wil be fine

Maybe look at getting your stock 70 amp alternator rewound...they can juice them up a bit - I got a 50 amp one upped to 64 amps for my corolla once upon a time - any reasonable auto elec can do this for you - there used to be a crowd in Rosemary Court near Brandon Park (Wheelers Hill) called CW Auto...don't think they're there anymore though.

Hehe been down this road myself and the only way i found to do it was to install the entire EF style serpentine belt system. I've tried using the EF alternator with the EA belt system but their are a few problems. One is that you would need to get a custom bracket made up as the EF alternator casing is physically bigger and doesn't fit into the origional EA bracket. You cannot use an EF bracket either as it has no provisions for a tensioner on it (EF's used autotensioners). I even temporarily rigged up ithe EA bracket to work with the EF alternator and found that the belts are far too thin to get a grip on the pulley due to the extra load the EF alt has over the EA. Even if you were to get it tight enough to grip you'll end up stuffing the bearings of your alternator anyway.

I tried everything I could but gave up and just installed the entire belt system off an EF. You've been warned lol...

Just put the EA pulley on an EF 120A alternator.

i went and had a chat to my car audio guy and he said that with an ED that has a 110amp alternator, if you have a dual battery and a decent cap you should be right for running 2.5kwmrs that i aspire to build up to.

Cheers guys.

This would mean that any alternator more than 100Amp wouldn't grip with the multi belt setup?I can understand the excess load. But a 120 amp alternator should not be under anymore load than a 70 amp, unless there's more than 70 been drawn. It should grip, and if it looses grip it should be when you are drawing too much current.
So I think, if it wasn't gripping it wasn't from the excess power capabilities, but from a crappy belt or something..?

Cheers

I tried 2 brand new belts, tried tightening the Fvuck out of it, but no go, every time i turned up the stereo the belt would just start screeching. GIve it a shot if you reckon you can make it work, i'm just letting you know of my experiences...
