I have a 4 channel kenwood amp
When you drive it hard for a while the sound drops down in DB Would this be cause its getting too hot? Any idea on how to cool it at all? |

i have no idea but will watch this thread cuz my amp shuts off when it gets to hot

The only way to cool it down is to have airflow running around where the amp is...like CPUs on a motherboard, they have a heat sink and the heat sink would disperse the heat more rapidly when there is air flow. Besides that the only way you can keep it cool is by not pushing it too much.

Try mounting it somewhere with more airflow maybe? out of the sun? Failing that.. crack her open and install some dc fans and heatsinks.. that'll help keep the thing cool.
Failing that, don't push the amp so hard or get a better amp. Mine pumps out 600W RMS into a single channel with 1100W peak.. the thing won't overheat no matter how hard and long you push it. |

set it up where there aint much sun going to be hitting the metal around it - or as many have said pull it apart and put in a nice little fan to cool it down - with a switch so you can turn it on when needed!!

different amps have different ways of dealing with heat... mine for example keeps on pumping even if hot in the boot, and just lets out a loud pop when it gets turned off, dispersing all the built up power due to heat....
some just use restriction to keep cool. im guessing your running a woofer on this amp, if so, you wanna make sure its not the voice coils in the woofer over heating and becoming weak.

Ive got mine under the passenger seat, so ive set up 2 large pc fans i got from Jaycar, and they just constantly blow air on the amp to cool it.

How is it mounted? Flat? Sideways? Upside down? Amps cool their best when mounted flat.
Most people use 12VDC fans to cool amps in sealed areas, so try those. |

youll find you would want to mount 4ch amps flat yes, with monoblocks its not such a big problem.... monoblocks have the power to overheat your woofer 3x faster then conventional amplifiers. but the acctuall amplifier runs cooler... ive heard of many cases of non monoblock amplifiers getting so hot that the solder on the joins and connections runs, therefore creating a short circuit...

Razor... Do you know how amplifiers work? What you've said is not correct. If you mean class D amplifiers by "monoblocks", then they are more efficient, so they waste less power as heat. They are about 80-90% efficient at turning the power in back into audio power out. Normal class A/B amps are only about 65-75% efficient, so use more power for less sound.
This does not mean that the speaker is going to overheat 3 times faster. It does mean if you had the same powered class D and class A/B amps to run the same speaker, the class D would run cooler, but it's still only making the same power as the other amp, not 3 times the heat or anything. I don't know who told you that, but you need to go and slap them 
My class D amp gets hotter than my class A/B amps... It just depends how hard that particular amp is running. |

^^^agreed....me and my mate run the same boschmann 4ch amp except he runs it bridged for sub n i run for speakers...his gets a s**t hotter just cause it has to put a out a s**t more power. Mine hardly heats up only running speakers, however my monoblock sometimes gets fairly warm when i give the sub a good workout

i think you missed my point, yes ofcourse with the same speaker the class D would run cooler HENCE having the power to pump the speaker harder then class A/B amps, therefore having the power to overheat that speaker more...
i think what i said earlier obviously wasnt entirely clear...

my amp has been shutting off due to the heat aswell, I cut some 15mm timber spacers for it so far it has helped, waiting for another day like last saturday (38)

i think what i said earlier obviously wasnt entirely clear... Running cooler does not mean more power though... If they're rated at the same power, they will produce the same power, which means the same heat to the speaker. The only difference will be the class D amp will run cooler. |

but if its running hot like xf_man could be suffering from, causing a loss in db, then if he had a Class D amp that didnt run as hot then he could keep the power up... IF he is suffering from DB loss due to heat.
