I am seriously considering upgrading the amp in my car. the sub i have currently is a 400w rms and the amp i am looking at is 500w rms.
will the extra power from the amp hurt the sub in any way? |

if respected, it'll be fine.
Don't go for whats written on it, use the specifications on the manual. 500 watts isn't always 500 watts, with Power theres no free lunch. Read: http://www.fordmods.com/forums/documents.php?doc=64 go by whats said there, S/N ratios etc. Theres watts and theres WATTS

yeah, i've had a read of that. this amp is quite good.
500W rms @ 20 - 200 hz (which is fine as its a monoblock) unfortuneatly its measured at 14.4V, but i cant find a rating at a lesser power. 100 dB S/N ratio. Its a kenwood KAC 9103D. Dunno bout sensitivity hwever. |

Kenwood... Surely theres a better amp than a Kenwood for the $$ you've got.
Whats your sub? I'm guessing its a 306C. |

Whats your sub? I'm guessing its a 306C. i havent said what dollars i got!! its around $380 where i am looking now. bout $120 cheaper than i can find it in stores. as far as decent power monoblocks go, its one of the cheaper ones i've seen from a brand that i at least know. and i didnt think they were too bad. cant remember the model number for my sub, but it is a kenwood 12" 800W max, 400W rms. (no i am not a s*** for kenwood, just seem to have the right deals at the right times! ) as southy said, what brands do you recomend? and southy, no i've never tried jaycar... if you were talking to me. lol |

Kenwood aren't the best but they are far from the worst on the market, most of the amps these days are made in china anyway, most likely in the same factory who knows....

depends on ur budget. if you have alot of spare dough look at dls, soundstream etc. if not most of the major brands ie jbl, pioneer, rockford fosgate, alpine etc are very good for their price

Actually, that model amp has pretty good specs (which surprised me)
It's not brands in particular, they all have their high/low markets. BUT I would most definitely keep away from Sony, Boss, Fusion (most of it), and whatever else obscure brands places like Strathfield or Supercheap sell ( add Rampage to that list). Specs of that Kenwood amp are: 1 Ohm@14.4V Over 900 Watts × 1 2 Ohm@14.4V 900 Watts × 1 (100Hz, 1.1%THD) 4 Ohm@14.4V 500 Watts × 1 (20-200Hz, .5%THD) Infrasonic Filter 15Hz, 25Hz, -18dB/oct Low-Pass Filter 50Hz-200Hz (Variable), -24dB/oct Max Output Power 1800 Watts RMS Power Output 500 Watts × 1 (1%THD+N) (4Ω) Signal-to-Noise Ratio 94dBA (Ref: 1 Watt into 4Ohm) Bass Boost 40Hz, dB-+18dB Thats actually pretty good. And it will allow for further upgrades due to its stability to a 1 ohm load. As for Jaycar, they have a new range coming out sometime soon, which is supposed to be much more compact, with better outputs and a better appearance. Their current range is pretty decent, however, you get what you pay for. |

southy, na, cash is a little bit tight as this is a bit of a luxury at the moment. So i didnt really want to spend too much more than that.
outlaw, lol, yeah, proly all made in same factory. krisis, yeah, i thought it seemed like a fairly good one too. and yeah, i know about sony and other autobarn/supercheap brands. thanks heaps fellas. all comments are appreciated and i'm taking it all on board. so just let me double check, the jist of the thread is... the amp will be fine as long as i treat it well, and the amp should be quite good for the job too. |

Yep appears as though the amp should be just what your looking for.
Make sure you set your gains properly though - it is not a volume control. If you get seriously stuck or in trouble pop over to MEA http://www.mobileelectronics.com.au/forums/index.php It used to be Car Audio Australia, and check out the tutorials or post up a q. Chris. |

There is very little difference in audio output from 400Wrms to 500Wrms... Doubling of power will create a 3dB increase which is not much when listening to music, so only 100W increase is not really worth the effort unless your current amp is playing up or something.

na mate, i'm not increasing my amp from 400 to 500 watts, i am wondering if 500watts rms amp will hurt a 400 watt rms sub.
from what i see here, as long as i am nice to it, itll be fine. |
