There is a general purpose unit called "the Cat".
See www.thecat.net.au

There is a table in their brochure that lists compatibility.

Also, some of the car audio units nominate "OEM controls compatibility" but not sure what that means...probably only valid for Japanese models.

I bought a new Head Unit for my AU Fairmont, The head unit has OEM Wired Remote with a Pic of a steering wheel thing on the front.. Its one of the more costly Kenwoods.. From AutoBarn they also said I buy a Wiring Loom which is another $200 and then another $200 again to install it all...

But yes, If you go somewhere that deals with Aftermarket gear they should point you in the right direction =)

There are adapters available - but it will cost several hundred bucks.
I wanted to do it but not THAT bad.

I looked at making it myself but it would take me too long and I've got nill free time.

I bought a new (never used) cat9 (the older version) adapter off evilbay for $75. I have put it into my EL, and I love it!
As has been said, the cat adapters are the easiest way to go. It really depends if you must keep the controls or not. the question is, how difficult is your head unit to operate when you are not looking? My head unit uses a massive jog dial that twists for the volume, and can be moved up, down, left and right to change preset/folder/playlist/track. I can do this easily without looking.
That being said the controls are really basic. All is can do is the volume up and down, and the seek button will vary, depending on the head unit and the function it is in. I have a Pioneer Head unit, and in radio mode, it will change the frequency 0.05 up, in CD and Ipod modes, it will move onto the next track.
My opinion: If you can get it cheap, go for it. If you have to pay full price, the cost will outweigh the benefit.
