I don't know if 6x9's will fit or not. If you have some lying around, you could just try them and see. But i would think that they might just be a bit big forthe original holes.
I know fusion do a 5x7" speaker, as my mate has recently put them in his BA, and he seems happy with them.

just not in a wagon tailgate or you get bashed on the head from the extra weight. I just swapped back to 6" because of this even with new struts. waste of money that was.!

I have got 6x9s in my AU (also uses 5x7s stock), what I have done is used a small spacer and mounted them from below (see pic). I've still got the factory grilles there covering them up. The only other option would be to use a spacer and mount the 6x9s from above because they will not fit in the 5x7 holes.

Dont bother with splits in the rear.

Use 6" splits up front and 2/3 way 6" speakers in the rear. If you're only after a small sound quality increase you can run them off the HU, but get an amp if you're serious. A 4ch with splits off front and sub off rear is a great start.
