I got one of those battery terminals with a built in voltmeter a while ago and put it on the positive wires and hooked the earth wire from it to ground and it works and all that, but stops the car from charging the battery while it's on. When this terminal is fitted the battery voltage can't even get to 13V, with it off 14V no problems. Just wondering if this just a queer terminal or if there all like this - as I like the idea of a voltmeter on my battery so am keen to try another one...

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-BATTERY-TERM ... dZViewItem
that's the one I have (that ain't no good). thought about trying this one but: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/GOLD-PLATED-BATT ... dZViewItem otherwise how much are the JayCar ones? What brand are they? JayCar sells a lot of AmpKing or something along that line brand gear that seems to be decent quality... |

What are you using to measure it?
I've found alot of those terminals are poorly calibrated compared to an expensive quality multimeter - good news is on the whole they are adjustable.

What you mean data_mine?
The problem I'm having is that it stops the alternator from charging the battery for some queer reason, not concerned about the accuracy at the moment... |

how do I know the alternators not charging?
I fit the terminal, start the car drive it and the voltmeter on the cluster sits very low and gradually gets lower. Turn the car, go to start it, bit of cranking over and then nothing, flat battery. Charge battery up, fit normal style terminal and everythings normal. And I've tried this terminal twice now to be sure. |

I've got a Jaycar one, I'm just wondering if the volt reading turns off automatically?? I missed out on Aaron's Stinger ones

Yes they do turn off automagically.

twr7cx wrote: how do I know the alternators not charging? Have you connected the alternator output wire up to the terminal correctly? It needs a direct connection to the battery via the terminal, not through any fuse or diode output that the new terminal may be giving you, these are designed to power AMPS and other equipment not to take power in.

yeah, the jaycar ones turn off after they have been on a set voltage for a little while, i.e. 13.3 - 13.7v
they can't be on all the time! |

They can be on all the time, they take two tens of f**k all power.
Other things in your car put a higher drain on the battery when it's off. clock, stereo, ECU keepalive, headlights (if you're a numpty ) I happen to have several meters in the car, one on the terminal, one on my 2F capacitor (whichis automatic), and another one that measures voltage and current (this one stays on all the time).

twr7cx sounds like the terminal has a internal short, or is causing a voltage drain somehow.
