each brand will have it's own version under a different name..... basically it plays around with the MP3's frequency range making it sound a hell of a lot better

here is Alpines description
"Another great new quality-boosting Alpine technology. Included on a variety of head units, it gives you selectable expansion modes for MP3, CD, DVD, and FM that restore quality lost in recording/transmission" but it doesnt work for WMA? does it?

Daniel Ummm, wire it in and turn it on Nice head unit...media xpander is a good feature for poorly recorded tracks / low bitrate MP3's. |

The alpines are a great unit special the top of the line ones, It takes some time getting use to the features of it but you will be very happy with it. The MX is a pretty good feature it cleanse out the music and makes it sound great. Check out ipersonalise on alpines website makes it easy to set the headunit up with and then you can download the settings and load them into the deck.

media expander is basically just the same as pressing "loud" on any other headunit.
it basically just boosts all the frequency ouputs, especially at low and high range.
