Hey everyone! Umm i might have jumped into this a little early, but, i saw a bargain that i couldn't resist (no pun intended). An Arepro 1 farad 20volt capacitor with a digital readout for $200. Now the bit i'm worried about (other than it exploding), is the cap overkill and will it fry my Alpine MRP-T220 and MRP-F240 amplifiers? I don't usually jump into anything this serious till i read up a little bit, but when i saw it, i was like the guy that buys a blow-off valve for his atmo Lancer (may have it but will never be able to use it). Fooly sikk moit!

Well as far as i know, the capacitor will just keep the power steady, and shouldnt blow anything. Dont trust me but

yeah what he said,
the capacitor just stores power and releases it when its needed. e.g a long bass note etc. i dont think it will fry anything

On your system it will look good. That's about it.

Capacitors are for people with big systems which have ne where between 2-4 subs and are for mainly used with SPL systems.
All they do is put more power into the amp and in turn thay are supposed to save battery power, but if you havent got a decent amp and or sub setup its just a waste of money having them, as it makes no real audible difference. Its up to you thou, thats just my opinion.

Caps even out the power when there is a large current draw particularly with amps driving subs where they draw a lot of power to drive them especially when they are pumping, this will cancel "clipping" which is a distortion when there is a lack of power to the sub amp.
It sounds crap too.

Caps are a very valuable thing in high powered systems and not always SPL, Many SQ systems use them to prevent subs dropping out beats under excessive current draw.
Basically a cap is used to store a higher amperage at the same voltage. You want these wired directly into the + line as close to the amp as possible. They work by storing large current volumns (ie 1farad) similiar to a battery and discharging it into the amp when its drawn upon. They become pointless when an amp is drawing less than 50amps at least. But make sure you are at least using 4Ga pos and neg power cable or else thats the lose/bottleneck in your power system. Cap is my next purchase, My sub amp hit a current draw of 73 amps on the weekend Also anyone cruising to canberra for summernats?? |

i suggest u up the battery before you go as far as a capacitor, its mainly just to reduce power loss at high draw, which doesn't make much sense if you still got a standard battery with little current to begin with, go for deep cell battery, then if your stereo starts to drop out on power then you go to the cap, otherwise you pretty much just buying it for show

capacitors tried and tested in an SPL setup. the cap was found to be actually detrimental to the system.

To be honest i really don't think it will make jack of a difference in MY system, maybe Kenwood Maverick's. Should've put the money toward a screen or something. |

or if you bought the cap because u were having problems with your electrical system you should have spent the money on upgrading ur battery or cabling...
either way, i'm not a fan of caps, they're what i consider car audio "rice"
