hey guys,
was just searching around in regards to an in car valve (tube) amplifier and came across this DIY site.. http://www.geocities.com/bobdanielak/caramp.html just wanted to get some feedback on your thoughts/comments on in car valve amps. The sound reproduction is second to none...(so warm and fuzzy...heh) |

the sounds from valve amps is supposed to be good yes,, but there is a reason they have been all but done away with..
valves have many floors which make them inferior to transistors hence why they are no longer common.. taking time to heat up for one, being incredibly fragile, large, and expensive etc etc etc... although i suppose some people just have to be different lol.. good on him if hes happy with it -mitch

Valves, especially when hot (ie. ON), don't like vibration much (ie. subs pumping, road vibration).
I wouldn't think they'd have too long a life span in a car environment. And if you can tell the difference between a valve amp, and a quality solid-state (transistor) amp, you're lying.

lol..good point data mine
was just asking cos i have a particular intrest in valve amps, and wondering if anyone else has had past expeince with them in any area...I built one a few years back for my home system and it sounds rather nice |

i do a lot of recording of bands and artists and the such, and one thing ive found is comparing the sound from a true valve pre-amp (Avalon Design VT-737SP) to a transistor pre-amp (Behringer VX2000), the only difference between the two is most proberbly gunna be your mind playing tricks, because people belive that if its got valves in there, its a fuller sound or whatever, you think, "oh well it must be a rich toasty sound" or whatever...
honestly i cant tell the difference, and i run all audio through studio monitors (Mackie HR824) which have a ruler-flat response anyway, so as mr data_mine sez: "if you can tell the difference - your lying" lol

I just love the way audiophiles go WAY over the top with their gear. Just wish I owned an audiophile shop, woul dmake a fortune buying cable from jaycar at $1, per meter, sticking on a sticker saying, the individual copper atoms have been aligned with an electron microsope and tweesers, and sell it for $100 per meter.
Or how wooden feet for your amp, makes it sound better, as does a wooden volume knob. www.dansdata.com (.au?) has some great audiophool stories.

The advantages with valve (toob is an american term, lol!) amps come primarily when you run them into overdrive however if you frequently run an amp into overdrive you don't deserve to own one.

Valve amps really aren't suited to the car audio environment.
They are also expensive and not very powerfull so on the whole they would not be my number one choice for car audio use

valve amps dont actually kill anything other then...valves, they are uncommon in cars and houses as well because they are high maintanance and very dangerous, the turn on voltage for a transistor, is .6V, simple, the turn on voltage of a valve.......... around 300V (midrange) yea yea i wudnt like 2 b shockd with anythin over .3 of a volt with 600mA but valves in cars are a big problem because you need a hefty setup tranny to get ur 14.5v supply up to around 300 or 400 V just to get a damn valve to turn on, oh and they are inefficient, that "warm red glow" that everyone loves, is wasted power ..... so yes useful they arent

There not cheap either. I built one for a yr 12 project and the mains transformer alone cost me $500 (custom wound coils etc) pluss 200 for valves, output transformers, a massive choke and all the other electrical trickery. Cost about 1500 all up, for an amp capable of pumping out a staggering 15 Watt RMS per channel.... Yay me...
