Hi I'm looking to install a CAT-10 to get the the steering wheel controls working in a ford AU1. There are three buttons seek, volume up and volume down. I was wondering what features the three buttons control in an aftermarket head unit, if you can use the steering wheel controls to flick through tracks. and also if you can use the steering wheel controls to control your ipod.

They do what theyre supposed to do. The buttons go to the cat 10, which converts it either to the plug on the back of the headunit, or it will convert it to a infrared signal (i think) which is then picked up by the headunit if it has a remote.

Thanks for posting sorry I'll clarify, I know what the CAT-10 does. I've never had the steering wheel controls working before so before spend a money on the audio system I'd like to know if the steering wheel controls can control more then volume up volume down functions in the head unit. I'd primararly like to control the ipod functions from the steering wheel, skip song back and forward and I'm unsure if it will work with the CAT-10. I'm also looking at the PAC SWI-X as an option which might require buying and hacking the cruise control buttons to add extra buttons for the functions I want, in which case I'm unsure if the control buttons use resistance or something else to activate functions, and if the cruise control and audio control buttons use the same resistance.

If your headunit can skip tracks on the ipod by pressing the track skip buton, then I think the seek button on the steering wheel will aswell. I know tha normal operation, pressing the seek button scans for radio stations and while playing cd's skip tracks forward. You are correct, all the steering wheel buttons work on resistance rather than on/off

Thanks that helps a lot I was unsure if the seek button only worked for radio. Now I just need a to find a stereo that can control the ipod from the head unit.

There are a range of options available for that. I use a pioneer 2100IB.
Alpine JVC Kenwood all have options it just a mater of how much you want to spend.

Correct. I have a CAT-10 fitted to my EL. The volume +/- are self explanatory. The seek button will basically replicate the Next track button on the HU (at least it does on the pioneer HU's. If I hold it down, it will Fast Forward through that track if connected to the iPod or playing a CD. Tapping it will skip to the next track. When playing the radio, it will jump .05 mhz (and if held down, it will then seek up to the next station).
You are not able to go backwards, as this was not available on the standard steering wheel controls

HTH
