gday guys i am now looking to buy a new amp to run my pioneer 6x9s and im just wondering whats the power specifications that i'll need to run my speakers at their optimum level?
The nominal rating is 80 Watts is there a particular amp anyone could recommend to me? I was looking at one of these http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-Response-2x8 ... dZViewItem but i am unsure how well it will run the speakers. http://www.pioneer.com.au/car_entertain ... index.html Also if someone could explain to me what the 5-way bit means and what the differences are betweem the different number of -ways. |

5 way.. 5 different speakers in the one..
eg 3 way front stage usually means, a set up of 3 different type of speakers.. eg, woofer mid-range and tweeter the 5 way seems abit excessive? doesnt seem to me that the SQ will be the best, definatly not better than a good 2-3 way setup? as for that amp.. not sure about it.. first thin to be warey off, its rated at 2*80wrms @ 14.4v.. the amp will probably never be fed that much power so in reality it is less than 80wrms.. as a rule it is better for an amp to be more powerful than the speaker ratings to give you some head room, and i think its bad to under power speakers. i would be looking at a 2 channel amp thats maybe ~2*100wrms quoted at 13.2v or something like that

14.4V is what your batt raises 2 when the car is running, and also the 2.4 v is pretty pointless anyway. If you want speakers and can wait till the new year i can get you some yellow cone pioneers for cheaper then u wud pay for the 5 ways (the yellow cone ones are their top of range ones) and are only 3 way and imo are a much better speaker, (i work at pioneer). and also, the response amp will be fine just dont expect to be winning sq comps with it good starter system tho

I run my pioneer 6x9's thru a JBL GTO 75.4 amp and it cranks pretty hard. Cost me $420 very happy with it.

The Response amp you have outlined will run them fine and to their maximum. The 5 way refers to the number of discrete drivers the speaker has.
i.e. 2 way means 2 seperate speakers. A woofer for low rangefrequencies and a tweeter for high range frequencies. They are typically crossed over at around 3khz. In a 3 way system there is a woofer, midrange and tweeter. In a 4 way there is a woofer, midrange, tweeter & super tweeter In a 5 way there is a woofer, midrange, tweeter & 2 x super tweeters. IMO Any more than 3 ways in coaxial speakers is unnecessary and i believe you go backwards in terms of quality. Generally a good set of 2 ways is best. The cheaper co-axials tend to have more drivers while better quality models use less drivers but better quality ones + better quality components in their crossovers. In the Pioneer range for example the bottom series 6 x 9's is a 5 way, the next series up 4 way and so on, with their top of the range ones (TS-D691S)being 6 x 9 2 ways... If you must grab 6 x 9's (and i emphasise if you must) then grab a good set of 2 ways and run them from that jaycar amp your considering. If your looking for good SQ and want to stick with Pioneer i would grab TS-C160R's and run them up front from the response amp.

Who actually has a car that runs at 14.4v??? I've only ever seen the standard 13.8v.
