Im very close to looking into a nice sub/amp package for the boot, i'm just wondering what kind of $$$ figure to expect on getting the boot all squared off and neat looking, but still beign able to lift up n get to the spare, and retain boot space, A similar set-up to this one with the spare tyre side being able to lift up. But in an EL.
Im not after cost of speakers/amps/subs but the extra money this type of custom install would cost ? Or any pointers on how I could save money and do it myself ? Ie anybody with progress pics, or measurements or thier own ideas, I have no idea on how to make sure it dosnt rattle or watever, any help would be cool ! If not ill end up a sucker at an audio store paying $$$ them 2 do it! |

Wouldnt cost a great deal i should imagine.. Only thing you really need is MDF, sound shield and Carpet etc.. I really need to do something like that for my XR6 i was going to redo the boot lining very soon, Carpet for that was only going to cost me $100. MDF is fairly cheap $10-$50, and sound shield would be around the $100- $150 mark.
If your going to be at the SA cruise comming up we can talk more

Id also like to know the costs of a pro custom install - have been going to do it myself for ages now, but i know for afact its getting nowhere as work takes 95% of my time, the other 5% is washing the car lol.
Im guessing they'd charge a bit, but $$$ roughly would be a help.. not to mention how long it takes em.

i had something similar done to a commodore i had awhile ago.
Had a custon box made for 3X10" subs, custom wall made for fitting a stacker in the drivers rear guard and a false floor with 2 amps mounted beneath with cut outs. all carpeted and looking very good, very usable space, cost me $750 about 3 years ago.

Well... The pic you have there is an install done by an FM member.
And it was done in, overall, a few hours. All done without advice or a professional. And it came out bloody good. And you cant really see it, but it has been designed in a way that you can easily remove the panel above the spare wheel and get to the wheel. All the amps are hidden, but they are there. I think Kyle can disassemble his boot in about 2 mins all ready for the drags... lol. Just need some MDF, carpet and basic tools. I'm sure you'd have alot of fun putting it together and ironing out the niggles yourself. Give you a bit more of a sense pride once its done. Its not a hard task. The only difference between you and a professional is that they've done it before and know exactly where to start. Whereas you might spend and hour deciding how to do things, but you will both end up with the same result. |

I have written this 3 times and lost it each time so here we go again for the 4th time…
Stores charge approx $45 per hr for custom work. This may sound expensive but remember they have access to some good tooling (such as air hacksaws, full size saw benches etc…) + get materials cheaper (fiberglass, carpet & MDF), PLUS have a heap of time saving tricks and shortcuts to get the jobs completed quicker than most of the rest of us.. I would estimate $500 for a store to make sub-box + backing board… As for doing it yourself, here’s what to do DIY - Find out the correct enclosure size for the subs - Measure the space available for them in the boot - 10min, $0 - Get a local cabinet maker to make the box to dimensions inc sloping back panel to go behind the seats - 0min, $100 - Get some stiff cardboard or corkflute (the stuff real estate signs are made from) and cut it into shape using a stanley knife to form the backing panel - 1hr, $30 - Stencil this over 6mm MDF and cut out the final backing board shape 20min, $20 - . Cut out carpet (or vinyl) with 50mm overhang around the edges. Spray contact adhesive onto back of material and onto MDF backing panel, allowing to set tacky for 30seconds before bringing together. Staple gun the material onto the back of the panel to hold in place. - 2hrs, $50 TOTAL DIY – 3hrs 30min; $200 TOTAL Store build – 0min; $500

Good stuff thier Aaron, yeah my estimates were close. I would love to get a boot setup like the one in the first picture BUT the LPG tank poses a big problem.
I have a few ideas about what i can do, but it still requires alot of work and a bit more $$$ than usual.. One day mabe.

also, in boot install's i see some subs mounted flat, eg sickd's where they are on a vertical board, and then in the first post, the subs are on an angle, like 30 degrees from vertical or whatever..
is there any advantage to mounting subs on an angle or flat?
