Hey guys im running a big power stereo in my AU. WHat would i need so i can run a second battery in the boot?

Lots of thick wire, a few fuse holders, battery terminals and a battery isolator.
Why do you think you need a second battery? How do you plan to use the stereo? With car running? With car off? Both? |

Depends on alot of things
for a basic setup you can have just a BIG solenoid on the second battery so it only pulls in when the car is running. Or you can have it so only power from the alternator will come through, but you would need a big diode aswell So. . Solenoid Big Battery cable small wire for activating the solenoid Diode (?) Terminals

hey its on a au series 2 falcon. I am goign to runa 1000 watt amp for the speakers and 2 1500watt rms amps for the subs.

With the running. I am looking at runing all the power to the amps from the battery in the boot. I am thinking of running a dry cell in the boot. So im guessign it would need to charge when the car is running that way the battery under the bonnet is only used to start and power the car like nomal.

When your car is running your alternator is providing the power, the battery will only provide power when your equipment draws more current than the alternator can supply. Even then if only does it for a split second with LOUD bass beats.
You're better off buying a dry/gel cell battery for the front and see how it goes rather than wasting the cash on an extra battery when you might not need it. |

so what would i need to be able to charge a dry cell battery in the boot?Im after the daul batteries so that the altenator isnt under pressure to keep the power for the stereo.

Also don't forget it needs to be a sealed battery not a normal car battery.....

Don't think that simply adding another battery will make everything better.
In order to run two batteries for what you are explaining you will need... - Roughly a 100A isolator - A nice length of at least 0g (or equivalent) wire The questions you need to ask yourself are... - How loud do I run my stereo? - Is it going to be drawing 100+ amps all the time? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but a Falcon alternator produces in the region of 70-80amps/hr. The amplifiers you are describing, at FULL volume, would be using something like 200amps. Simply adding a second battery will delay how long it takes for your battery system to run flat. The isolator will compensate for the drain on the rear battery by transferring more charge to it. Like Stone said, your best bet is to run one nice big dry cell battery in the front with good wiring. ... Unless your name is pyroay ...

??? All batteries are sealed... If you do install a battery in your boot then it needs to be stored in a fixed sealed box which is vented to the outside

a sealed battery is one that doesnt have any liquid inside them (like a Lead Acid battery aka supercheap specials)

I was under the impression that's what you call a dry cell battery mate. They use a low-moisture electrolyte as opposed to a liquid electrolyte in lead-acid batteries.
Sealed batteries are simply batteries that are... well... sealed

EF alts are 110amps, EL 100amp.
I think he might have meant a sealed box in the boot for the battery in the boot. |

You're not understanding. A second battery puts more strain on the alternator, not less. The alternator supplies power to the car and charges the battery... If you have more than one battery the alternator has to charge the additional batteries therefore is working harder. The only time the second battery will be used is if the amps draw too much power for the alternator and your voltage drops down to the batteries level. This will happen with one, two, three or 50 batteries. Anyway, if you REALLY want a second battery, it has already been explained what you need. Battery, wire, isolator, fuse holders, fuses, etc. If you can't work it out, you should take it to a professional. |
