I got 5.25" up front and 6x9" in the rear parcel shelf. I went with 5.25" up front because I couldn't find a decent set of 6" that had a small enough magnet structure to fit in the door and I didn't want to be cutting bigger holes or using MDF spacers. I figured it was better to go a good set of 5.25" then a lesser set of 6".
The 6x9" in the rear are mounted with plastic Jaycar spacers... They're fairly low profile and don't look too dorky. Pic's are in my progress thread. It works well... However I want to replace all my speakers with better quality ones... I'm happy with the size just not the quality :P

You'll find anything from 5.5" to 6.5" might'/should/will fit. Bascially different manufacturs measure there speakers differently. As mentioned above though, the magnet depth is another thing to consider. There are speaker spacers and that readily and cheaply avaliable to.

I'm supposed to have 6.5" splits at the front...but only have the drivers side in at the moment. Just a spacer was good enough to fit it in.

I have 8" 3 way speakers in the rear...took the old parcel shelf cover off and made my own custom parcel shelf to fit those in.

Just some little $10 MDF spacers will fix that. But in the doors, make sure they don't bring the speaker out so much that they are too close or touch the grill.

on that note too...make sure the magnet isn't too far in that the window won't come down...so you have to judge it right. If it don't fit because the magnet is too far in...pull off the stock gril and let it pop through ....may look awkward but better then having a window open half way.

Only problem with cutting the standard holes out that much is that you then "breach the cars structural integrity" and make it unroadworthy. That's why I use spacers... cutting the s**t out of your parcel shelf is a very hard mod to reverse if you get defected and have to take your car over the pits...

Yeh that's fine... the law states something like the whole cannot be cut any more than 10% larger or something... This is only what I remember from reading it ages ago... Someone correct me?

to the original question, i have 6" speakers all round and they dropped straight in no fuss.

replaced the fronts with alpine 6.5" splits and only had issues with magnet depth. Just ended up using the supplied adaptor spacer and it was fine.
