I've just completed a new sub box for my 94 falcon, and its the first time i've ever had a sub or ever built a box. Im pretty happy with how it turned out, and the main motivation for this box was to create a box that didnt take up the main part of the boot, as other boxes do. It also allowed me to easily hide the amp (security reasons) and to make it look good at the same time. All materials were sourced from Bunnings (it helps when you work there) and althought the carpet was a bit thick, it turned out ok. The sub is a 12 inch Pioneer, and fits perfectly in the box. I paid $360 for the amp on ebay, they are readily available there and some are located in australia, as opposed to being located overseas then shipped out here.

Thanks a lot for the comments guys, im really happy with it for my first go at a box. The amp enclosure suits the Pioneer amp perfectly, (it was made to fit it) but trouble could be encountered with a larger amp, however there is room to make the box taller, its just that my stacker hangs beneath the parcel shelf and so the box has to fit underneath. The amp could also be housed in the top of the box, but you would not be able to see it that easily. (this can be a good thing). The beauty of this box is that it is easily secured to the floor, so that it cannot move around at all. It is commonly thought that the area just behind the seats is flat and level, when actually it slopes towards the seats. By gluing a piece of 10mm chipboard to the floor using liquid nails, it not only provided a perfectly level base, but allowed me to screw the completed box to the floor, through the floor of the sub box into the chipboard, with access through the hole in which the sub goes. this also means that the box cannot be removed unless the woofer is removed, a good security device. The cost of materials is about $80-90, and this is mainly:

2400x1200x18mm sheet of MDF $48
2mx1m of Thin Black Carpet $32
Aluminium Angle for amp enclosure $4

The basic tools required are:

Plane: this is a must are there are so many angled corners in the box, but MDF is suprisingly easy to plane.
Saw: an electric circular saw is easiest but a handsaw can be used, and a jigsaw also helps.

I am in the process of creating a CAD Drawing for the box, and that will be fully dimensioned with angles as well, this can be emailed to anyone interested.

Pro job mate looks really good. Any heat issues with the amp being so close to the back seats and kind of boxed in?

No problems at all mate, because the amp is class D, it produces far less heat than other amps. It should not be too much of a problem with other amps, and if the amp is working particularly hard, the seat can always be folded down for more ventilation.

even though u work at bunnings $48 is heaps.

and dont cut mdf with a saw.....set up a fence and use a rounter... much better finish. use a mask because mdf dust s poisonous.

if ne1 is gonna make 1 try to use single or double sided cacase mdf becasue no air at all can get through the malemine

VERY NICELY DONE ive got velcro on the bottom of mine so it doesnt fly everywhere when i go around corners

Its a great job, have you had any problem with the bass travelling into the cabin, i have a similar set up. There is a hell of a lot of bass in the boot area but seem to not travel through...Alot of Vibration and no sound.

The bass seems to travel very well through the cabin, and now that i have fixed the porblem of the bootlid vibrating, it sounds much better!

i have a very similar setup with sub box built into the back. Was wondering how u stopped the boot rattle that u mentioned.

take boot lining off boot lid get a silicone gun and silicone the frame to the sheet metal, because it vibrate against thge frame.

put the cover back over and you will never know and will stop vibration by at least 90 %.

i done it got rid of the vibration that the 15' jl produces but now my number plate rattles.

moves to the next weakest spot.
