Hi all
I am looking to replace the factory rear parcel shelf-mounted 8" sub in my EL Fairmont Ghia. The car comes standard with a 250W face, 6 CD-stacker in the boot, and 9 speakers including the sub (which I have now unplugged as it is blown). I am wondering if the factory amp is powerful enough to run a new sub. One installer said I will need a new amp, but another said I should find out if the factory amp can supply ~150W to the sub, in which case it should be fine. I am considering the JBL GTO804: http://www.jbl.com/EN-US/Products/Pages/ProductDetails.aspx?PID=GTO804 If I can use the factory amp this will save even more cost because I should be able to install the sub myself, but I am hoping to get a bit more oomph out of the system too... There is another problem - my car has a LPG tank in the boot, and the factory sub only just fits in over it. Will this cause issues with installation and limit my options? I have included some photos of the sub and system - hopefully you guys can help me out! Thanks heaps Jason |

Measure the gap between the parcel shelf and the top of the gas tank and find a subwoofer that has the correct depth requirement.
You could try the Pioneer shallow subwoofer, that should fit but I am not sure if it comes in an 8". If you want the JBL instead and it doesn't fit properly, you can always use a spacer underneath the parcelshelf carpet to raise it up a little.

I suggest you buy the sub first, install it and see if the factory sub has enough watts to power it.
If you then feel it doesn't have enough power for your needs then you can buy an external amp to power it. |

I agree, try it out.
Also, I have an 8" Shallow Mount Pioneer Sub here that will fit in above that tank easily. Im In Adelaide too. If you want it, PM Me. Its not very old, and I'll do you a good price. |

Just out of curiosity how did you go with the Sub, I don't have LPG however I would like a bit more punch from the sub in my Ghia sub as well.
