Itchieone mate, you wouldn't happen to know any fibreglass places because we are from the same place. Cheers mate, and a good idea about the mould. but yeah i was going to just use the mat made from strands as i am going to give it a coat or two of bog because i would like to paint it, and if i cant get it perfect and will stick vynal on it.

last time i did any fiberglassing was long ago
back then there was a place in south melbourne that stocked all sorts of goodies including molding clay and pre-impregnated carbon fiber matting. they were really helpfull. check the yellow pages under 'fiberglass' and you might find them, sorry but can't remember their business name. forget the chopped strand mat, bog and vinal; make a mold and test it with a pre-production shelf using cheap fiberglass. then make your final shelf in pre-impregnated carbon fiber matting and don't paint it (you may need to use special uv stabilized resin with carbom fiber matting)

thanks for the help mate. I will have a look and when a find a place i will see what they recommend for a first time user,and also what is involved. What i have found is the more complicated the name, the more expensive.
But i will definately look into it. cheers |

I found that bunnings had all the gear from noob to pro and the old blokes there actually knew their stuff, they have all the carbon fibre gear also. Just a quick tip, use foil wrap as your release agent no need to get gels and the sort foil works a treat and it Sooooo much cheaper!

Bunnings, supercheep and other non specialist fiberglass shops are just too expensive, especially in kit form. You are much better off going to a specialist fiberglass shop and for what you pay at bunnings, etc, you will get twice the resin, fiber and other needed bits. As for release agents, they are normally a wax and/or silicon spray and are used to stop what you are making from sticking to the mold. That is they allow you to release your finished item from the mold The only referance to gels i have heard is related to 'gel coat'. A gel coat is the first resin layer sprayed or brushed on your mold and is the layer you see on your finished item

mate thanks for the help i looked in the yellow pages and there is a place under five minutes from my pace which specialises in fibreglass so i will definately talk to them and see what they recommend.

By the way i was just reading the original post, you do need to let it fully set before applying another coat. It it is covered and not exposed to the air it will never set properly, so apply it let it set (can be assisted with a heat gun) then when hard add another layer.
The number of latyers you need to do is relative to the amout of strength you need it to have. A parcell shelf does not normally need more than say 3 coats but if your mounting speakers on them you may need to do a couple more. PS This will consume a fair amount of matting (i would say 2msq and will be prety time consuming but well done for giving it a go keen to see your progress....

Cheers Yeah good mate, i decided not to use fibreglass in the end...sorry  ...But it is coming good. I have taken some pics along the way and will post em up prob on tues. Yesterday i got a good ten hour start and made the structure. Then today i am going to do the curves and filler to smooth it out. Then tomorrow i aim to stick the underlay to the metal shelf and put the vynal on. So its coming along alright.
