Hey guys, great that the site's back online!
I want to upgrade to 6X9 in the rear parcel shelf. I've been tole I need spacers. How do I fit spacers to the parcel shelf? They seem to only have screws on the one side for the speakers to screw onto. Thanks

dont know
you may need to drill some other holes , at least you can get to back of them through the boot ,( just a bit squashy)so you can even use small bolts or something |

You can have the parcel shelf cut but I've only 'heard' that this is illegal.. Otherwise you can get boxes which blocks view or you can get the spacers which aren't very expensive from Supercheap.

mmm
all spacers are different a lot of the time you just have to get some really long screws, and the same screws go thru the speaker, all the way thru the spacer and into the parcel shelf. othertimes they are mounted differently there are millions of different kinds of spacers.

it is illegal to modify ure parcel shelf, but you won't get in trouble unless its a C**k of a cop, spacers juss look funny, but it does the job, juss use long screws and drill it to the shelf

Why is it illegal? Do you know? Most, if not all, modification laws seem to be about safety. Where is the safety issue with modifying a parcel shelf? Vibrate, I'm not arguing with you, just wondering if someone can point out the logic to me! If they can't, then it's a stupid law. hehe

It’s illegal because the parcel shelf is a structural part of the car, and removing any part of it weakens the car.
You can have it done legally by an engineer (but nobody bothers) I’m sure you have all heard stories about the guy who’s system broke the back window, this is more than likely because of all the metal that was removed from the parcel shelf. One of the other reasons is because of the child seat anchoring points in the back If you don’t want to cut it you can mount the 6x9’s from underneath but it kind of defeats the purpose of getting a bigger speaker. Even if you have an e series on gas you can normally cut the shelf and get them in. Just cut it that’s what everyone does.

Apparantley the parcel shelf provides a great deal of structural integrity for the rear of the car. Makes sense, not much else bracing that part of the car and would be a fair bit of load in the region (rear window, roof, boot etc.) As for spacers, can look pretty good if done nicely with carpet etc - try and make it look factoryish. Other alternative is to rebuild an MDF parcel shelf ontop of the steel one. Make it nice and thick and may be able to fit 6x9's flush in there..... just an idea.

I made up a custom made one for my XF, and i got it checked out by the coppas too and they said its fine so you should do the same. (If your handy with a saw and measuring tool etc that is...).
Sounds 110% better thou doing it that way, rather than using the spacers... I personally would not use the spacers but hey thats just me. ......Oh i just relised i never took pics of the finished product either... cars gone now so its too late to show ya now LOL.

I was putting rears in my step dads lancer, and they were 6.5" and the ones before them had different holes, and I asked an audio shop, they said, you can cut the parcle shelf, the wood part, aslong as the metal part doesn't get modfiied it should be fine. Also spacers if illegal, are just gonna stand out more than if you cut the whole and fit them in. The more factory look the less attention you get. But im sure they don't really care.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm not very handy with a saw plus the gas tank in the back's a pretty big pain. I'll just get the spacers and take the pics of the finished product and upload it.
cheers for ur help

yeah well basically everyone covered it already, but yeah juss messing with the metal screws with strength, the spacers juss give you enuff space to fit a bigger magnet through the factory spaces, i used boxes but then again its on the floor in the rear of the explorer, there is no parcel shelf
