have a relay hooked up so that it cuts constant power to the light when the accessories circuit comes live

Would be a wise idea to use a normally closed rela. Much easier to wire up

using a changeover relay, you can wire the relay to make or break a circuit, in this case you would use the normally closed contacts, meaning the relay would break the circuit when power was supplied to the accessories circuit

It can be done without a relay, wire 12 volts to the positive side of the LED, wire the negative side to the ACC or IGN connection of the ingition barrel(easiest way is at the fuse box).
When the car is off the LED will use the accessories/ignition circuit to earth through, the resistance of the accessories/ignition circuit won't be a problem. When you run the car the LED will see 12 volts at both its connections and will not light.
